Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

Walter JonesU.S. Rep. Walter Jones has taken a lot of flak from Republican Party regulars mainly because he has questioned the wisdom of the war in Iraq.

But while the Farmville Republican has angered some party regulars, there are signs the GOP establishment is not ready to abandon him, Rob Christensen reports.

Jones raised more than $50,000 Tuesday night at a Washington fund raiser attended by Rep. Tom Cole, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

Hosting the event was Jones' North Carolina colleague, Howard Coble of Greensboro.

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

Well the ACU rating counts voting against free trade deals as a liberal vote which I happen to disagree on as global free trade was a Wilsonian ideal up and until the Second World War when Republicans started buying into the mess. On social values he is solid, he is pushing now for a bill to have women seeking an abortion to view the ultrasound before making a final decision.

I don't agree with the pork projects but there's no one in the Congress ay maybe Congressman Ron Paul who is a total saint on the matter. As for Democrats giving him money, he has not compromised on social issues and I agree with his stance on the war so any Democrat who wants to give to a Republican wanting to preserve traditional marriage and end sanctioned abortion is fine by me.

I know that I am out of the mainstream in regards to impeachment but I'd rather stick with the Constitution then just what the president or the party is doing at any particular time.

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

Seems like you are very informed guy. Not to many "average citizens" are quoting ratings from the National Taxpayers Union. I'll play the game though. A few minutes on Google can bring you a wealth of info.
First of all, you may want to hit "refresh" on your browser when you visit the National Taxpayers Union site. Walter USED TO BE listed as a taxpayers friend. Not anymore. In fact, his latest score was a 57, one of the lowest Republican scores in Congress.
Walter's Club for Growth RePork Card score was an 18, the biggest drop by any Republican. American Conservative Union score of a 79. (anything below an 80 is considered liberal) He used to score 100's and there are no other NC Republicans who scored below an 88. Don't bother arguing about lifetime scores either. I vote in the here and now.

Interesting that you didn't respond to Walter's voting record on the pork. What about his campaign report full of donations from Democrats? Silent on that one too.

And finally, you also agree with Walter on the impeachment of the President? Walter's views do not represent the mainstream of the Republican Party and yours don't either.

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

I spent my time in college down that way. On the border I can't think of too many men better then him save Tancredo, Hunter, and Dana Rorabacher. As for impeaching the president and vice-president (and I say this as someone who campaigned for them in 2004) under the letter of the law they have failed to enforce the border and secure the states from invasion so I'd say that they warrent impeachment for that offense specifically. He has voted against CAFTA and other bad trade deals that have decimated eastern NC and my part of the state by Hickory a great deal. On abortion and gay marriage I daresay there aren't many Republicans as strident as he is on these issues. My congressman, Patrick McHenry (R-NC10) also spends money to keep constitutents informed which I say I appreciate. He also is considered a Taxpayer's Friend by the National Taxpayers Union so he is no tax and spend left winger. He may not be perfect but on just about every major issue he is right on conservative values. Just because he opposes continuing the war in Iraq doesn't make him a liberal.

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

Carlton, Do you live in eastern North Carolina? Those of us who live here have been enlightened to Walter's record and it is anything but Republican.
How can you be good on taxes when you are spending hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars on automated phone calls and mail pieces?
He voted to move forward with impeaching the Vice President and said he would impeach the President if he got the chance. Republican?
He voted for all those crazy pork projects with the Democrats. (against Republican earmark amendments 46 out of 50)
He has broken his tax pledge and voted to raise taxes twice.
He voted in favor of the agriculture bill that included money for illegal aliens.
Look at his latest campaign report online at www.fec.gov. He is being funded by liberal Democrats including Rufus Edminsten and he has more Democrat donors than Republican.
We pride ourselves around here on being conservative and doing our homework and those of us who have taken the time to look have found that Walter Jones is not a Republican. He is a Democrat, plain and simple.

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

The only thing Jones diverges from Republican orthodoxy on is the war in Iraq. Otherwise he's great on values issues, border security, and taxes. Considering we've been in Iraq far too long I think Jones is the model congressman and sincerely hope for his success in his reelection bid.

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

the only way the Republican Party will need Jones is if we are transforming ourselves to become Democrats!

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

Walter WAS a great man. Since 2004, he has gone farther and farther away from the Republican Party and from the values we sent him to Washington to represent.

He is proud of the fact that he hasn't spoken to the White House in over 5 years. How effective can he be in getting things done for us when he doesn't work with the Executive Branch?

His desire to bring the troops home has clouded his judgement on other matters; he has voted with the Democrats on two-thirds of key issues. He is willing to support issues he never would have in the past to build support for his positions on Iraq.

When you start compromising some values to acheive others, you have lost your moral compass. Walter needs to leave office; since he won't do it on his own, someone needs to send him home.

Joe McLaughlin holds the values we Republicans cherish, and understands that you don't bail out halfway through a conflict. He will represent the 3rd District well in the US House of Representatives.

One last thought - In the past, Walter B. Jones Jr. raised tons of money inside the district. If his fundraising in the beltway is newsworthy, is it because he ISN'T getting the support from the district any more?

HMMMMMM -

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

As far as I'm concerned Walter Jones needs to come home and stay home. He claims to be for the military and their families, but that's only if they agree with him. In April of 07 my daughter was back in NC because she and her husband (who was stationed in Iraq) were expecting their third child. As a registered voter she, I and my husband attended the 3rd District Republican convention where Mr. Jones was the keynote speaker. After Mr. Jones spoke my daughter went out in the hall to speak with him. Her husband had asked her if she saw Mr. Jones to ask him to "stop selling them out. They had a job to do and they wanted to get it done." When she gave Mr.Jones her husbands message he became very angry yelling at her that we couldn't afford the war; he then shoved a piece of paper at her showing what the other coalation members were contributing to the war on terror. Mr. Jones says he stands for the military and their families, but as he so rudely demonstrated by yelling at a pregnant woman who's husband is in Iraq for the third time, he only stands for them if they agree with him.

So as for me I'm glad that a man who has served our country by being in the military and is truly a gentleman will be a true representative of the 3rd district. Thanks Joe for standing up against a man who serves his interest not the constituents.

Thanks to Joe McLaughlin I will be able to hold my head up high once again when I tell family and friends who my Congressman is.

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

Well now isn't this a surprise! Washington Insiders hanging out and raising money? Walter Jones is having a tough time back home in the NC 3rd District raising a dime from his old contributors due to his anti-war stance and political lurch to the Left. Joe McLaughlin, a retired Army Airborne/ Ranger has taken the Primary fight to Walter and Walter is trying to call-up his Washington D.C. reserves. Hooraah, Joe!!

Re: Jones raises $50,000 with GOP help

This is great news. Walter is a great man and the GOP will need men like him when the party rebuilds in the next few years. He's great on values issues and on the border so I hope he trounces McLaughlin this May.
