Democratic strategists Nation Hahn, wife Jamie stabbed; Jon Broyhill charged

Police have charged a man with stabbing and seriously wounding two well-known Democratic political strategists at their home in North Raleigh on Monday evening.

Jonathan Wayne Broyhill is accused of stabbing Nation Richard Hahn and his wife, Jameson Kirk Hahn, at 1705 Tealwood Place. Broyhill, 31, has been charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Police say Broyhill knew the Hahns but have not disclosed what led to the stabbing, except to say that investigators think “the events underlying the incident were not domestic in nature.” Broyhill was also injured and taken to the hospital.

The families of the couple issued a statement this afternoon that read: “Jamie Hahn is fighting for her life and Nation, her husband, is by her side. Our families and her friends are devastated. We deeply appreciate the thoughts and expressions of love we have received.

“Jamie is a strong and courageous young woman and a bright light to us all. Pray for her.”

Nation Hahn, 27, is well known among North Carolina Democratic political circles. He is an online strategist who has helped many politicians and non-profit organizations with direct mail and email campaigns.

Broyhill and Nation Hahn are natives of Lenoir and old friends. Broyhill served as Nation Hahn’s best man at the couple’s wedding in 2009.

Some of the groups he has worked with include the Coalition to Protect All N.C. Families, a campaign opposed to the state constitutional amendment that limits marriage to a union between a man and a woman. He has also worked with the N.C. Sierra Club, the United Football League and former U.S. Sen. John Edwards’ presidential campaign.

Jamie Hahn also worked on campaigns for several high-profile politicians, including Edwards, former U.S. Congressman Brad Miller and former U.S. Senate candidate Ken Lewis. She was a professional fundraiser who ran Sky Blue Strategies.

The Hahns both graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill.

State Sen. Josh Stein, a Democrat from Wake County, today tweeted: “The tragic attack on Jamie Hahn is horrible beyond words. Jamie and Nation are in our thoughts and prayers. Please pull through Jamie.”

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said officers received a call about a stabbing from the 6600 block of Tealbriar Drive, near North Ridge Park, shortly before 5:30 p.m. Monday. That call led them to the Hahns’ home, where they found the couple and Broyhill suffering from serious stab wounds.
