UPDATED:Four N.C. Republicans in Congress voted against providing $9.7 billion in aid to victims of Superstorm Sandy, including two new freshmen.
The lawmakers who voted against: Virginia Foxx of Banner Elk, Mark Meadows of Hendersonville, George Holding of Raleigh and Richard Hudson of Charlotte.
The three GOPers didn't immediately explain their votes -- part of a group of 67 Republicans who voted against the aid requested by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a Republican Party star. The vote: 354-67.
In today's paper, Holding describes his main priority is to limit spending. Meadows is already being attacked by Democrats as a card-carrying tea partier. And Foxx is known for her uber-conservative stances.

What of the pork?
January 5, 2013 - 8:34pm — nancyncSome of the items included in the Senate bill had no business being attached, Obama said he would not sign pork laden bills but apparently that was not the truth either.
Included in the bill but not limited to ....
$58 million in subsidies for tree planting on private properties (McCain tried to get that removed, his proposal failed)
$150 million for fisheries disasters that could go to Alaska as well as Gulf Coast and New England states (Coburn tried to get that removed, that failed too)
$400 million into a community development program for regions suffering disasters, beyond areas struck by Sandy.
$5.3 billion for the Army Corps of Engineers that has no accompanying statement of priorities on how to spend the money
$11.7 billion to help repair New York City's subways
$20,000 to buy a new car for the Department of Justice's inspector general
$10.8 billion for the Federal Transportation Administration
$4 million for repairs at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida
$3.3 million for the Plum Island Animal Disease Center
Cancellation of loans related to Hurricane Katrina.
This wasn't disaster aid but looting the treasury!
January 5, 2013 - 4:55pm — ViewfromthelakeThe Senate porked up this bill so much it was a joke. Boehner was right to delay vote, and I'm proud of these four GOP House members for voting NO!
Mark Meadows

Unbelievable
January 4, 2013 - 11:08pm — GetSeriousSo the three GOPers didn't immediately explain their "nay" votes, eh? Not surprising. An explanation would require that they have enough wherewithall to make sure their stories jibed with their political puppeteers' talking points, and that takes time. Lots and lots of time.
sandy aid
January 4, 2013 - 4:43pm — CapeFear54Wow. Just...wow.
Holding - What a great start - voting against Sandy aid!

Shame On These NC Reps
January 4, 2013 - 3:26pm — tarheel73North Carolina regularly has been hit by hurricanes and been a recipient of federal disaster relief. This relief has been disproportionately paid by Northeastern states with their higher paying jobs. Nobody can predit where or when the next disaster will hit. These representatives are completely irresponsible for voting against relief this time.
Four no votes
January 4, 2013 - 2:02pm — daveribarHi. Rep. Richard Hudson (NC-8) also voted against.
