Pope Foundation announces $800k in December donations

The John William Pope Foundation has announced it will give $810,500 to an array of organizations in its December cycle of grants.

“We’re privileged to continue supporting these organizations that help so many in our community,” said Art Pope, the group's president and chairman. “In these difficult times in North Carolina, families continue to struggle. These humanitarian organizations provide a helping hand for those in need.”

The Asheville School is the largest recipient, getting $225,000, and the Pope Foundation added four new charities to its grantee list:

SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals: Provides housing, healing, and hope to families with an adult patient being treated for a critical illness or injury at UNC Hospitals or its affiliated clinics.

The Green Chair Project: Accepts gently used furniture and household items and re-sells them at a significant markdown to the working poor. Families benefit, and so does the environment because furniture that otherwise might end up in a landfill is reused.

Helping Horse Therapeutic Riding Program: Provides horseback riding lessons for special-needs children. Therapeutic horseback riding has proven physical, mental, and psychological benefits for individuals with disabilities.

Miracle League of the Triangle: Offers an opportunity for special-needs children to play baseball.

And a very Merry Christmas to you too! Mr _Tybee.

The stuff one finds on anonymous comment boards.... the mind reels.

still not enough, dude

Art Pope could donate ten times this amount each year and it still would not be enough to buy his way into heaven. Pope's mean-spirited, misguided ultra-far right policies that intrude on our lives also keep children in permanent poverty, break up families, divide citizens against each other using lies and destroy our state's amazing natural and educational resources. I think every organization that got the money should take it and spend it happily -- let some good come out of Pope's blood money. But I hope Pope has no illusions and that the people who have sold out and work for him have no illusions: this doesn't excuse the absolutely terrible things you do to our state and to the people who live here.
