Burr says Rubio could use 'a little more experience' to be Romney's VP

Sen. Richard Burr said during a radio interview Tuesday that "conventional wisdom" suggests Rob Portman will be Mitt Romney's vice presidential pick and that younger possibilities like Marco Rubio could use "a little more experience."

Burr offered the comments to 1110 WBT Charlotte in response to a question of who Romney should select.

"The conventional wisdom will tell you a Rob Portman out of Ohio," Burr said, according to The Hill. "A longshot would be a Kelly Ayotte out of New Hampshire, where geographically there's not a huge number of electoral votes that come out of there but somebody incredibly capable, a female, a little different twist. And then you could see something as generic as former Governor Pawlenty who brings his expertise and own experience in Minnesota."

When asked about Rubio, Burr said that Republicans "have qualified candidates, some are younger than others and many of the younger ones you'd like to see get a little more experience under their belt so that they pass that instantaneous test in their minds: could they be president tomorrow?"

Rubio has campaigned for Romney in North Carolina, including a book signing for his recently-released "An American Son" last month at Quail Ridge Books & Music in Raleigh. Pawlenty was in town last week throwing support behind Romney.
