Hagan makes changes to staff

U.S. Sen. Kay Hagan has changed up her staff.

The Greensboro Democrat named as her new state director Melissa Midgett, a Dare County native who has worked for her for several years, most recently as deputy state director.

Hagan also named as her new deputy state director Tony Caravano, deputy director of UNC Tomorrow at the University of North Carolina System.

Caravano formerly worked for Senate leader Marc Basnight, a key ally of Hagan's when she was in the state Senate.

The staff changes come a little more than a month after Hagan hired and immediately fired longtime fiscal analyst Fred Aikens and let go of state political director Muthoni Wambu.

The state chapter of the NAACP is looking into those firings.

Update: Hagan also announced that Jennifer Johnson will work as constituent services director and Caitlin Legacki will be state press secretary.

Text of the release after the jump.

—————

Melissa Midgett, who previously served as Deputy State Director, has been promoted to North Carolina State Director.  Born and raised in Dare County, Midgett served on Hagan’s campaign as Deputy Finance Director. Melissa, who has worked for Senator Hagan for several years, including time in the state senate, graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Tony Caravano will serve as Hagan’s Deputy State Director.  Caravano joins Hagan’s staff following a two-year stint as Deputy Director of UNC Tomorrow at the University of North Carolina General Administration.  Prior to that, Caravano served as Director of Legislative Outreach at the North Carolina State Senate. Caravano is a graduate of North Carolina State University and served two terms as Student Body President.

Jennifer Johnson will serve as Senator Hagan’s Constituent Services Director. Raised in Greensboro, Johnson previously served as Representative Ron Klein’s (D-FL) casework director.  Johnson is a graduate of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington.

Caitlin Legacki, who joined Hagan’s staff in February, will serve as Senator Hagan’s North Carolina Press Secretary.  A graduate of the University of North Carolina, Legacki recently served as press secretary on Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s (D-NH) Senate campaign. During the 2008 presidential primary, Caitlin worked in the press offices of former North Carolina Senator John Edwards’ Chapel Hill and Iowa headquarters.

Re: Hagan makes changes to staff

It is good that Sen. Hagan has a new "state director" that is from North Carolina and has a history of constituent services rather than a national political operative in that role.

Also, the story states that Sen. Hagen "let go of state political director Muthoni Wambu". Why would a U.S. Senator, now representing all North Carolinians, have someone with the title "state political director" on their taxpayer funded staff? That is a title would normally be on a campaign or as part of a PAC. Is doing political work at tax payer expense be against the law or at least the Senate ethics rules?

That Wilmington Journal article was interesting. After all the support that Sen. Hagan received, it is sad that she no longer has any minorities on her staff.

Re: Hagan makes changes to staff

Because she works hard does not mean that she is not subject to imperfections.

Good article about BURR!

Re: Hagan makes changes to staff

I am assuming that the above poster is referring to Melissa in her "realty company" comments. That poster has clearly not done their homework. If they had, they would have realized that Melissa is one of the hardest working individuals in North Carolina, having worked tirelessly for North Carolinians in Senator Hagan's NC Senate Office for a number of years. Considering that constituent services is a fundamental part of a public servant's office, we can all be thankful that Melissa is on board with Senator Hagan in NC once again.

Re: Hagan makes changes to staff

So where is the link to the story you are referring to by the weekly publication in Wilmington? Is the publication neutral or biased? Who did the research?

Re: Hagan makes changes to staff

Im waiting for the Wilmington NAACP to 'fire up' the folks on these
firings. Something's brewing, I feel it.

Re: Hagan makes changes to staff

Has the N&O done any further pressing to find the real reason why Aikens and Wambu were fired?

Nope

A small weekly publication in Wilmington did the investigative research...Yet still no answers from Hagan's campaign...

Re: Hagan makes changes to staff

Why does Hagan need any staff? She mortgaged my children's future by voting yes on the 3 trillion dollar stimulus bill. 1100 pages, didn't read the bill. If all she's going to do is rubber stamp what her democrat overlords want her to, that doesn't take any staff....

thanks for the heads up on her state director. Now I know what realty company to stay away from when vacationing in the Outer Banks!
