Synopsis

Myrick ran for the Charlotte City Council in the 1980s after becoming angry over a property dispute. In 1987, she was elected the city's first female mayor, and she was re-elected two years later. She won a seat in 1994 in the U.S. House in the Ninth Congressional District, which covers parts of Charlotte and nearby suburbs. As freshman liaison to then-Speaker Newt Gingrich, she was a high-profile member of the Republican revolution. After being treated for breast cancer, she sponsored a law in 1999 to extend Medicaid coverage for breast and cervical cancer. She voted for the Iraq war resolution. Recently, she has proposed bills that would crackdown on illegal immigration.
