Synopsis | Hayes' grandfather was textile magnate Charles Cannon. He was elected to the Concord Board of Aldermen in 1978. He served in the the N.C. House of Representatives from 1992 to 1996, when he ran for governor. Two years later, he was elected to the Eighth Congressional District, which covers the south central Piedmont from Charlotte to Fayetteville. He opposed the Central America Free Trade Agreement, but he provided the winning vote for it in 2005 in exchange for pledges of help for North Carolina's textile industry. He has sponsored bills that would increase penalties for telemarketing fraud aimed at seniors, boost incentives for ethanol and increase the retirement age for commercial pilots. According to Roll Call, he is the 10th richest member of Congress. |
