Synopsis

Watt grew up in a house with no running water or electricity and became one of the first black students at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was campaign manager for Harvey Gantt in several races and served in the N.C. Senate from 1985 to 1986. In 1992, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in the then newly created 12th Congressional District, which includes urban areas from Greensboro to Charlotte along Interstate 85. In 2004, he helped preserve funding for the Hope VI housing program. In 2005 and 2006, he chaired the Congressional Black Caucus.

Trivia

He has been starting pitcher for the Democratic Congressional baseball team since 1995.
