Synopsis

Holliman grew up in Graham, the son of a delivery man and a textile worker. He won election to the N.C. House of Representatives in 2000 representing Davidson County. He was one of the first Democrats to criticize then House Speaker Jim Black for ethical lapses and ran for speaker in 2006. He became House majority leader in 2007. A supporter of the death penalty, he watched the execution of his daughter's killer. He proposed bills in 2005 and 2007 that would limit smoking in restaurants and other public places. In September of 2007, he had a tumor removed from his lung.
