State Sen. Fred Smith is a millionaire with interests in law, home and road building and banking.

Smith, who is running for the Republican nomination for governor, was the managing partner of Smith Debnam, a Raleigh law firm with 30 attorneys.

He's also a major homebuilder who's built subdivisions such as Hedingham in Raleigh, and Riverwood and Lion's Gate in Clayton.

He's also chief executive officer of C.C. Mangum, a Raleigh-based road building company that is a contractor for the state Department of Transportation.

In addition, he's chairman of the board of North State Bank.

According to his annual disclosure form filed with the State Ethics Commission, Smith has a stake in the Fred Smith Family Co. and C.C. Mangum Co. and is a managing member of Blackwolf Run, RWAC Rental, Black & Gold LLC and Riverwood on the Neuse.

The Fred Smith Family Co. also has substantial interests in the Fred Smith Co., the Riverwood Golf & Athletic Club (formerly SunBelt Golf Group), C.C. Mangum Co. and the LionsGate Village apartments.

LionsGate Village Co. has a stake in Prime Only, a Raleigh steakhouse, and C.C. Mangum Co. has a stake in River Works, a stream restoration company.

The form also reveals that Smith owns more than $10,000 in stock for each of the following: North State Bank, Wachovia Bank, Bank of America, KS Bancorp and LSB Bancshares.

In addition, Smith made income from renting his private jet to Cary contractor Steve Fowler, prominent Republican donor Cliff Benson Jr., and Glen-Tree Investments, which is building the Soleil Center in Raleigh, among others.
