Phipps' guilty plea

Fresh out of prison, former state agriculture commissioner Meg Scott Phipps recently compared herself to the Duke lacrosse players who were declared innocent.

In 2003, Phipps had a different plea: Guilty.

The Democrat signed court papers that made several factual admissions related to her case:

* She accepted illegal cash contributions from companies that wanted to do business with the N.C. Department of Agriculture and kept some of the money for herself.

* She used campaign money to repay debts of Bobby McLamb's campaign, an aide who earlier ran against her, and then filed a misleading memo with the State Board of Elections about it.

* She knew that her top assistant was going to lie during a hearing with the State Board of Elections and pressured her to lie to criminal investigators as well.

* She lied during her testimony to the State Board of Elections.
