Cliffside letter

A bipartisan group of 23 legislators urged the N.C. Utilities Commission in February to finish public hearings on a proposed coal plant.

In the Feb. 27, 2007, letter, the legislators write that the public has already had "extensive opportunities" to provide comment on the controversial Cliffside project, an 800-megawatt coal-fired plant planned by Duke Energy Corp. in the Blue Ridge foothills.

"In fact, this has been the most thorough proceeding of its kind in our state in over 20 years," they wrote.

The letter was sent five days after another letter from 18 legislators requested a three-month suspension on the issue.

Among the signatories on the Feb. 27 letter are prominent Democrats, Senate Majority Leader Tony Rand and House Majority Leader Hugh Holliman, as well as a prominent Republican, Senate Minority Leader Phil Berger.

All but two of the legislators who signed the letter received money from Duke Energy's political action committee in 2006.

Incidentally, Berger's name is misspelled at the bottom.

Re: Cliffside letter

Duke Energy has not sought public support on the Cliffside project, and Duke Energy has failed to explain to the public the amount of pollution that will be associated with this facility. No public health data has been presented by the NC agency responsible for monitoring air quality around the current plant vs the new plant. So, yes the proceedings have gone on for an extended period, but that is because there have been lots of questions and attempts to find the facts surrounding this project.

Sorry to say, but Duke Power Company used to be a decent corporate citizen. It seems that is no longer the case.
