Re: Drought bill moves ahead

The problem with drought plans is easily reflected in the comment below. People will only conserve when they see themselves in a crisis, and a little bit of rainfall is enough to make them think everything's fine. Well, it's not fine, and it hasn't been for some time now.

We need to change the way we handle water, which means we need to change the design of our homes and buildings. Reusing grey water for toilets and irrigation saves an incredible amount of potable water, even when people aren't trying to conserve.

Agri-Ethanol Products Announces $150 Million Ethanol Plant For Beaufort County, North Carolina
This will be the first ethanol plant in North Carolina and the first on the east coast.

Beaufort County, NC (PRWEB) December 16, 2005 -- Dave Brady, managing member of Agri-Ethanol Products, LLC (AEP) today announced the location of a $150 million ethanol plant to be located in Beaufort County, near Aurora, North Carolina. Mr. Brady thanked Governor Easley for the assistance that the state of North Carolina provided in making the plant possible. He also expressed his sincere appreciation to Secretary of Commerce, Jim Fain, Secretary of Revenue, Norris Tolson, Senator Marc Basnight, Representative Arthur Williams, Representative Joe Tolson, Larry Shirley and NC Department of Energy, the Northeast Partnership, Tom Thompson and the Beaufort County Economic Development Commission, the Town of Aurora and Roseview Capital.

The plant will produce 114 million gallons of ethanol per year as well as co-products consisting of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) and CO2. This will be the first ethanol plant in North Carolina and the first on the East Coast of the United States.

The ethanol production will be delivered in each of two, 57 million gallon per year phases, with the co-products output doubling accordingly. Phase I ground breaking and construction start-up is expected during the first quarter of ’06. Approximately $2 million will be utilized through various grant sources from the State to facilitate rail improvements critical to the operation of the plant.

Mr. Brady stated that there will be 74 people involved in the ethanol and CO2 production at the site, with several hundred more jobs related to indirect employment such as delivery of grain, shipment of ethanol, the distribution of the DDGS and CO2.

AEP’s plant will consume in excess of 20 million bushels of grain per year for each phase and can use corn or grain sorghum interchangeably. An additional crop, hull-less barley, is expected to be integrated into the operation of the facility at some date in the future, as will bio-diesel production.

Ryan--any word on the company's role in this? They offered money for a speedy permit, what does that say about the company? Were they given state incentives? Lots of unanswered questions.

He is registered as a Democrat according to the State Board of Elections, but I hardly think that's relevant, since he was not an elected official or acting in a political capacity.

We don't regularly post the political affiliations of people arrested in our crime coverage, for example.

Re: Farm "groups "oppose it?

Wow I bet farm groups do oppose this. Just think of all the industrial factory farms for hogs, chickens and turkeys in NC. Don't know about the chickens and turkeys but the hog factory farms use a lot of water daily. These operations suck a lot of water out of the ground. Some may recycle but probably alot do not. Maybe DENR should try and figure out just how much water is being used just in eastern NC by industrial factory farms. Then you have the huge cone of depression under Smithfield Foods in Tar Heel. Salt water intrusion in areas in Bladen County.

I've always thought of the Farm Bureau as one group, not "groups." The article mentions no others.

Re: Benton sworn in

mr. benton, you are on track to look into the fiasco of the new hospital being built in butner Central Regional Psychiatric Center. The new hosp is too small to serve the mentallly ill in this region. the census has gotten higher and is not going to slow down anytime soon. Sure, we can sweep these ill patients under the rug but, in due time, the ugly head will roar. There are some people who just do better in a facility such as dix. Remember it wil be law makers such as yourself that will be held responsible if we neglect one patient and that one patient does a horrific crime. It is much wiser to prevent accidents than to pay out for negligence. Our ER's are now overbooked w/ illegal aliens, uninsured middle income folks and poor. Now throw in the mentally disturbed into the mix and we have a recipe for disaster. (and we thought Bin-Ladin was some one to fear-ha) Please look at the real #'s of the people served by both facility before anyone makes decisions. There is nothing outside of here that can provide emergency care for the mentally ill. Crisis pts dont go into crisis Mon-Fri 8-5. They are the dangerous ones that would hurt themselves or others. You are a man of good intergrity and dont let this ruin your career. Rise above it and do the right thing. Penny wise and pound foolish. remember those words during talks. remember those that are ill and need a voice. Be that one brave voice for these patients.
