This shows the power of the utility industry. I have a fish pond dam that has to be inspected every year or so and they can have one every 5 years. What a scam. They should never be allowed to hide any ash in water ponds. There are other ways to protect from contamination but naturally, this one is the cheapest.

This is a good law that will protect the public against the danger of a coal ash dam breaking and giving us the great problems that Tennessee has experienced because of the massive amounts of sludge let loose in their state. As Ben Franklin once wrote:"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

We should be grateful to Rep. Pricey Harrison and Sen. David Hoyle for getting the bill passed, and to Gov. Bev Perdue for signing it into law.

This is the kind of issue I will be paying attention to in my own campaign for the NC Senate Dist. 15, in 2010, as we examine other environmental challenges in the Triangle area.

and Jim Black sleeps well tonight because NC taxpayers can go eat "poop" and die. (think about that when the justifications start rolling in, I bet nobody mentions what taxpayers are being fed - only that we need to digest it without making much noise)

The story needs to be clearer about what is meant by "tax liability". Is that the same as the "North Carolina Income Tax" line on the tax form? If so, then people's tax bill for the year would be increased by the surcharge percentage regardless of whether they had too much or too little withheld from their paychecks during the tax year. Some reports, however, make it sound as though the surcharge applies only to the amount of tax still owed at tax filing time. In that case, if a person had the right amount withheld throughout the year, the surcharge might be very small or none at all.

I would think so. As a matter of fact, I think she is the lead engineer on the North Carolina runaway tax train. Let's just hope she makes sure all the bridges are safe before steamrolling this train across the backs of North Carolina's working families.

Senator Clark Jenkins is not from Carteret County, Senator Preston is. Jenkins is from Pitt, Edgecombe, and Martin.

No, these companies have and will terminate relations with NC website owners. There will be no increased sales tax, only decreased income tax. Thousands of NC website owners hurt or put out of business. Why would they do this knowing it means less tax revenue for the state? Absolutely insane.

Why do you adopt their terminology?

Call it what it is. A 2 percentage point increase on people making $100,000 - making their income tax rate 9.75%.
