The vets are on to something here. Unstable weather, droughts, hurricanes and rising sea levels all bring on chaos. In addition, America's dependence on foreign oil, mostly from violent, anti-American Middle East countries, keep us under their thumb.

The pending American Clean Energy and Security Act in Congress needs to become law. The ACESA puts the environmental ball back in our court by giving us incentives for investments in energy efficiency and renewable energy such as wind and solar, and by boostering the transition to a clean-energy economy. Such new investments in clean-energy technologies would lower global warming pollution and reduce foreign oil use. It would, as well, create jobs and increase our economic competitiveness in the world.

I salute Veterans for American Power for this proactive effort. As a Vietnam veteran, I feel this is a new call to action. It may not require a uniform, as before, but it does demand our commitment to sacrifice for the security interests of our nation, and it can be done without firing a single shot.

Will there be a CAMP LEJEUNE TEA PARTY to join all the other TEA PARTIES ACROSS AMERICA TOMORROW IN PROTEST of the 'stimilus'...

I hope they all realize that the rEVOLution is happening while they smile their evil smiles at the MARINES!!!

MSNBC reported last night that Republican leaders have "allowed" their members to vote with Democrats until the election if it will help get them reelected.

I think that would be an important tidbit to include in a story like this? It makes it clear that dole is CYA, not doing what she thinks is right, what she thinks is right is straight-party votes.

* Climate Change: Dole co-sponsored a "cap and trade" bill to reduce carbon emissions by Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman and Republican John Warner this session.

Really? Collaborating on a cap-and-trade deal (which gives away permits to polluters for free) with a Republican and an "Independent" who is actively campaigning for John McCain?

I've asked Sen. Hagan for a similar list. The question of who would work more across party lines came up at the debate, and I've been investigating the records of both candidates. I think it's reasonable to ask them which examples they would cite as part of that research.

How about 3 ANWR's-worth of oil?

That's what bumping the CAFE standards up from 27.5 mpg to 35 mpg (should have been 45, but I'll take what we got for now) will represent for us by 2020: a reduction of our oil usage by 2.5 million barrels per day.

note: that's also around 900,000 tons of c02 not emitted per day...

Back in 04, we were consuming approximately 21 million barrels of oil per day (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/print/us.html). If we started drilling in ANWR today, we'd begin getting oil out of there in 9 years. After 21 years, we'd reach ANWR's peak production of 876,000 barrels per day (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4542853/). So, even at peak production, 21 years from now, drilling in ANWR would expand our oil supply by no more than 4% of current consumption. Why bother?

Good grief, a John Locke plant chimes in to tout "poll" results at complete variance with a consistent multi-decade pattern of results from unbiased polling organizations in our state. A strong and consistent majority of North Carolinians, especially including coastal residents, have never supported risking our natural heritage and active coastal economy just to fatten the profits of Big Oil.

Keep dreaming, friend; its tendency to believe its own extremist rhetoric is what keeps the Locke crew politically marginal in our competitive state.

Elizabeth Dole has shown her true colors by picking the economically and environmentally worst options within the energy debate to tout for next year. With any luck, she won't be in the Senate next year to promote this backward-looking agenda.

Liddy voted for a bill she knew wouldn't pass. I'm mostly glad it didn't pass. I would have given the illusion of progress with no teeth whatsoever.
