Absolutely stupid discrimatory bill. Enormous burden on all rural counties which make up the vast majority of North Carolina while attempting to stuff the pockets of the metropolitan areas. Road conditions of paved secondary-roads would decay and become horrific. Horrible Horrible idea. You can't have it both ways Rocho. There is no second-class, first-class North Carolina. We are all North Carolina.

Seriously??? So why are we paying a huge gas tax???

Why don't they just use the money in the highway trust fund? (sarcasm)

If this governor an the former governor had worked harder at manging state government agency's eairlier on. instead of waiting for the cow to be let out of the barn then there would't have to be the furloughs of state employees an the drastic cuts they need to quit trying to run state goevrnment as a business an run it as a state government agency that it is . if businesses were allowed to operated with deceficts they would need to have to be bailed out by the taxpayers of this nation but since we have got such a great governor an legisture running the states government we don't have this to worry about. oh thats right though they are having to be bailed outwith taxpayers funding. they also need to stop the coporate give aways / coporate welfare in the form of tax breaks an the stupid incentives programs to give coporation funding just to bring a few mimumin wage jobs to north carolina that usually end up not even being worth the incentives that were given away to start with i say it is time to stop punishing state employees for the legistures stupid spending priorities period . had my say

If I may point out, George Bush spent more federal dollars than any previous Republican president and helmed the first $700 billion bailout that went largely unaccounted for. Also, the man's vaunted tax cuts were scheduled to sunset in 2010 - once he left office - because they were completely unsustainable, and his buddies in Congress knew as such.

We need to lose the partisan fingerpointing - both sides of the aisle spend ridiculous amounts of money on ridiculous projects. Bush and his crack squad torched Republican credibility. Deal with it, regroup, offer countermeasures that actually make sense in what is easily the greatest economic challenge of our time. But don't scream Democrat, Democrat, Democrat in the echo chambers of the internet and expect anyone to care.

It is not my tax dollars - Obama and the Democrats in Congress are spending money now but they do not have any plans to pay for all of this money they are spending. So it will be future generations who will be having to pay for this spending - pretty sweet deal!!! I wonder if I can got out and spend alot of money and have my children pay for it??

Re: Earmarks can displace road funds

Of course the people who currently decide who gets road funds don’t want interference from Washington.
The equity formula is an accounting trick; anyone who thinks road funds are distributed based on public need or anything other than political pull is not paying attention.
Too many local political leaders are team players who look the other way when the public they claim to represent is shortchanged on highway funds. For years the major papers have refused to expose the glaring misallocation of funds because they support the politicians most responsible.
If the press would map the way state funds for roads, parks, museums and conservation have ended up supporting private real estate deals that profit prominent politicos, the public would have a better understanding of why in these tough economic times the state is putting a five lane road into Pamlico County, a county with a population of less than 15,000, and how the state happened to build a bridge to nowhere in Anson County.

As an ELON alumnus...would you please poll people on their opinion for the Constitutional need for states rights and sovereignty from the federal government? thanks!

Re: Quick Hits

The Governor announced today a $64,000,000 project to connect Hwy 70 with the GTP Parkway.

I'm not sure how many miles it is but not too many. And a rail spur is being added to the GTP for some $35,000,000 or so. And then a couple of miles of other roads are to be paved.

We're spending some serious money at the GTP and hopefully we can spend that place to success. But keep in mind that we don't have any airplanes out there yet. Since it is an airport we were sorta figuring that some planes would look nice out there. They don't have to fly or anything. Just something to park so the kids could look at them.

Re: Stimulus spending will be online

Will the information say whether the money is a loan and North Carolina has to pay it back?

Will the information say the money will begin a new program that North Carolina will have to put in the budget after the money runs out?

Will the information say the plan is to hire x number of people for x number of month(s), year(s) and then North Carolina has to either lay them off or find them jobs elsewhere?

It is easy to spend. It is harder to build.

I hope Bev Perdue takes the hard road to recovery and does not spend for political expediency and prolong the inevitable. Essentially sending North Carolinians up the proverbial tax creek without a paddle!
