WOW! and to think if he wasn't doing anything corrupt......he wouldn't have to be so defensive! this guy is a joke. blame the news, easley.....without it I bet you could have gotten away with alot! Scary to think that this is what is running our government. sure if you don't do something right....it's the news' fault for telling it.

"My job is to be nice to other people and their job is to be nice to me."

Say WHAT? If he truly believes either half of that equation, I am simply dumbfounded. Speechless.

As thick as dictionaries and thesaurus are .... they fail to contain words that adequately describe Mike Easley. With the expectations bar for Governor-Elect Dumpling set at the lowest possible level by even her stauncest supporters, all Bev has to do to outshine this galoot is go an entire week without totally embarrassing herself, the state and the human race.

Mary should book Mike to speak at NCSU on the subject of how such a spineless, gutless human managed to earn the enthusiastic support of both the N&O and its Charlotte sister paper for both of his gubernatorial campaigns.

Re: Binker on Hagan's appropriations bills

This is typical entrenched Democratic tax, tax, tax, spend, spend, spend.
Until the voters realize that, we will continue to be known as a democratic mafia state and a national laughing stock.
The governor could not find any real cuts in a 22 billion dollar budget. That $400 miilion is money not spent directly in last years budget.
Our budget is 45% larger than it was in 2002. That's only six years ago!

Only with a Republican majority and governorship can we get back to responsible budgeting and taxing. There has and still is to many examples of corruption in this state. The Demoruption party needs to be taught some humility by the voters.

Paul Terrell
Republican nominee for the 33rd State House district

Thanks for adding the context. I'd add that members often submit bills for purely political purposes. That is, they submit a bill to placate a constituent, but never actually push to get the funding. Also, most bills contain inflated numbers because people know that the dollar amounts will be negotiated downwards in most instances.

Re: politely put - bull.

Gov. Easley has made plenty of good policy speeches throughout the last seven-plus years. It's just that they haven't all been delivered Inside the Beltway in the Capital City and perhaps some political reporters in the state's capital press corps haven't been inclined to go out and experience the joys of "Variety Vacationland."

But there is news out there in the hills of the Piedmont and the West just as there is across the great inner and outer coastal plans of Eastern North Carolina. You just have to get out of Raleigh every now and then and write about what the people--and some of their elected leaders--are up to between Belhaven nad Blowing Rock.

Gov. Jim Holshouser used to hold periodic "People's Day" meetings in towns and cities across the state, and sometimes reporters would even show up to see what Joe and Jane Citizen had to say to the distinguished visitor. But back then in the early '70s, Raleigh didn't have all these new highway loops for reporters to cruise in looking for major news developments in and around the suburbs of the Capital City, so they would take a deep breath and embark on an occasional journey along the byways and back roads of Tar Heel political lore.

(Okay, this sketch of N.C. politics may not be as vivid as a Dwane Powell cartoon, but remember, cartoonists must be on good social terms with reporters and not draw them with curious faces of they might not get inside information on the latest lunchtime barbecue specials.)

In the last eight years I can count on one hands the number of hifalutin policy speeches I've heard from Easley. Now, it seems like he is in the news regularly.

Maybe it's just me, maybe some intrepid reporter could actually crunch the numbers and see.

I'm disappointed that Jim made the "breeder" comment and the one about there being no Jews in Greensboro, not because I think he is a heterosexual-hating antisemite, but because they are foolish comments to make if one is serious about seeking office.

The Helms comments? No, sorry, I don't think anyone is going to hold those agin' him. They weren't mean spirited. In fact, I suspect some of Helms' fans would repeat the McCain joke and enjoy it thoroughly.

This journalist and Jim Neal are disgusting. This is supposed to be a campaign for the US Senate and not a campaign to promote gays in American political life. In addition the mean spirited bashing of Senator Helms will hardly play well especially among those of us North Carolinians who love and respect the Senator. As for the Jewish comment I doubt the ADL will call him on it as left wingers hardly hold each other to account for epithets while they routinely crucify right wingers.
