Sounds like a political mafia in Raleigh.

"And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars."

If you read on in this passage it says, "And ye shall hear of patronage and rumors of patronage."

The plot thickens

As if all of the above isn't enough, conjecture has been swirling here in Raleigh that the aforementioned Ripley Rand is awaiting appointment from President elect Obama as a United States Attorney. When will the political welfare end for that family? Has Ripley interviewed for a job in this century? Ever?

I hope Ripley and Shannon are taking steps to ensure the health of King Tony because once he's gone, who's going to hire them?

What a load of of bs from Shannon Joseph (Rand).

The whole family is at the front of the political patronage welfare line, so why does she blatantly lie about it? Are we supposed to believe seriously that this woman, married to a double political appointee, & daughter-in-law of an Easley ally, did not request and was unaware of this appointment? Puh-lease. I'm a lifelong Democrat who generally admires Tony Rand but this just reeks of hypocrisy and favoritism. I guess Senator Rand's son and daughter-in-law have no shame, or at least no ability to step away from the gravy train to which they both now owe their jobs.

I'll concede JohnBurns' point - she might be smart, and she might be qualified - but this whole affair is shameful, and yes, JohnBurns, it does matter to whom she is married.

As PoliticalJunkie stated above, if she's too dumb (or dishonest) to acknowledge what happened here, I question whether she deserves the appointment.

This episode reminds me of the popular tv series, "Night Court."

That show also had some strange plotlines.

.... It could be worse. Check to see if Mike and Mary stole the silverware and fine china like the Clintons did.

I've got an idea about who suggested Joseph...

...perhaps she should talk to her father-in-law.

If she's too dumb to figure this out, or, god forbid, thinks we're too dumb to figure it out, she's too dumb to be a superior court judge.

Justice is supposed to be blind not dumb - though in this case if Joseph had remained dumb when asked the question she'd have been better off.

More of the cronyism that has blackened this state for years. It's slightly surprising that Easley would preempt his successor, Bev Perdue-- another member of the Rand-Basnight mafia that really runs the state. But Easley seems to have felt his last days were "liberating" in more ways than one.

Seems some of the people posting on here might want to know whether or not these folks would be good judges. Shame the paper doesn't discuss that, but is instead trying to gin up controversy over their appointment.

Joseph went to Wake Law School with me, and she is extremely bright. Professionally, I've never heard a negative word about her. I think she'll be a very solid judge. Who she is married to is not the issue.

"Joseph said she didn’t know she was being considered until the middle of last week, and is not sure who brought up her name to Easley."

I don't have a problem with political patronage, I have a problem when politic patrons think the public is so stupid to know what is going on. Of course Joseph knows who brought her name up to Easley, we all know it was her father in-law.
