no thankss, think I'll walk the greenway over the holidays. Read yesterday at Energy Bulletin that the US was down to a 20-day supply of gasoline anyway.

Do the DOT electronic message boards identify the construction area by exit number? Or by road name?

Traveling I-40 east of Raleigh recently, I saw a message board warning about construction between US-70 and some intersection in Johnston county. If I were told the exits numbers, I could look at a mile marker and tell how soon and how far my trip would be affected.

In Sunday's N&O, the traveler headed to RDU for his flight home to Boston erred because the message board wasn't understandable to him and to others who don't live in the Triangle area. He would have taken the detour if he had been told to expect extensive delays 14 miles ahead on I-40, between exits 273 and 276.

It would also help if he knew the I-85/NC-147 detour would add only one mile to his trip beyond exit 280 (Davis Drive).

I'm driving from Raleigh to Greensboro this afternoon, and will probably be hitting the problem area on my way back sometime between 9 and 10 tonight. Hoping that if it's raining they won't be working on it and the roads will be clear, but am planning on an alternate route, just in case. Thanks for keeping us advised of the wheres and the whens. :)

Westbound congestion?

I was surprised this morning to see (at the top of this page): "5:11 AM, I-40 W, Congestion, Fayetteville Rd"

If there are 3 clear westbound lanes, there's hardly enough traffic at this hour for rubberneckers to slow things down to 26 MPH (which is what was reported). Or are they doing things in the westbound lanes that they're not telling us about? Anybody have on-the-road experience? It's hard to tell in the dark what's going on from the cameras. It might be a good idea to use the 147 detour this weekend even if you're going west.

I did not receive an email dated Tues 4/24, which according to the instructions means I need to sign up again, but nothing happens when I click on "subscribe." My email address appears over the "subscribe" button. Am I supposed to re-enter information in order to re-subscribe? How?
