I agree that there were a lot more questions on economics than I'm used to seeing on civics tests. Although they weren't my weak spot on the test, that could skew the results for high schoolers.

From my own experience, Keynesian economics did not come up in Mr. Seidel's class at Bellevue High.

Seriously, I wish you had linked to my web post, not just the shrill criticism.

Rob Christensen's December 2 column has an analysis of what he considers the state of civics education in the United States, based on a test created by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. Christensen's column wraps with a link to this test, which I found hard, somewhat bizarre, and dramatically tilted in favor of knowing all about the kind of dead white men these people adore. And what does Christensen have to say in the interest of full disclosure?

ISI is a conservative-leaning organization founded in 1953.

If you follow my link to the ISI website, you will discover that "conservative leaning" describes ISI about as well as "objective reporter" describes Rob Christensen himself. The website features The Conservative Mind as part of its top-level navigation, Clarence Thomas, as an honored lecturer, with links throughout the site to Townhall.com.

All I know is that if Bob Orr put out a press release claiming to have scored a 112, that the claim would show up unchallenged on Under the Dome...especially if he used that claim to show why illegal immigrants should be denied educational opportunities.

Damning with faint praise

Just to be clear, my "praise" for Orr is faint indeed. From my post yesterday.

Back before I knew Bob Orr, I harangued him because of his association with Art Pope. You might say I was brutal. Somewhere along the way, though, Orr responded to something I wrote, which led to us striking up an email conversation. I found him to be smart, sincere and decent, and have said so on several occasions.

I don't think he has a snowball's chance of being the Republican gubernatorial nominee, and I really don't want him to be governor, specifically because of his long-standing relationship with Pope.

I've also "praised" Mike Munger, who is running for governor in the Libertarian party. Munger is a nice guy, and is also very smart.

Just because Munger and Orr aren't neocon lunatics like Graham and Smith, doesn't mean either should be governor. I'm supporting Perdue.

I was hoping I'd get promoted to 'gadfly.'

It baffles me that people entrusted to represent We the People can hang on with such ferocity to their trappings of power when it's clear they've lost credibility. And yet the only ones who really feel the pressure are small-time transgressors like Wright. In the grand scheme, his "crimes" pale in comparison to what is transpiring in the Bush Administration.

But I don't see a groundswell of North Carolina Republicans calling for the incompetent liars, torturers and war-profiteers in the White House to resign.
