The domain name nodrinktax.com is registered to professional astroturfers Berman and Company.
Find out more about Richard Berman

Liquor is absurdly cheap in NC. You can buy a bottle of spirits for the price of a cocktail. I leave airport duty-free liquor stores empty-handed because ABC prices are comparable.

Re: Quick Hits

Polk vetoed a spending bill because it had too much pork in it: Polk contended that to interpret the Spending Clause to permit such appropriations would allow "combinations of individual and local interests [that would be] strong enough to control legislation, absorb the revenues of the country, and plunge the government into a hopeless indebtedness."

Such thinking is anathema these heady neo-Keynesian pre-double-digit-inflation days.

Citizen,

If you would remove your head from other areas of your anatomy you would see that Sen. Hagan's website looks like most other freshman members of the Senate. Give them some time to get things going. I would imagine Burr's site looked similar until he had time to get it up and running.

50 mph on a moped or scooter

Increasing the speed limit to 50 mph on a moped or scooter would be a good first step to assisted suicide. Might as well let them take the helmets off too. And let them pull one of those extra large boats the legislature approved last year. A trifecta.

http://hagan.senate.gov/constituent_services.cfm

I guess Hagan is never going to let us know where she stands on issues...

That is change we can believe...

Every other Senator has their issues on the website but not her...great...

Good point. It also seems to pick up on the other meaning of "chunked" as tearing something larger (in this case, the sod) into chunks.

true, but in this situation it is completely different. Chunk in golf has a negative denotation, where as the southern colloquialism does not.

But it does seem to have a similar meaning of hitting something into the air.

Chunk has a different meaning in relationship to golf than what you are thinking about. In golf it means you hit the ground before you hit the ball leaving a huge divot (chunk of dirt).

Chunk is the Southern version of chuck. You see, the letter “c” and the letter “k” are pronounced somewhat alike down here in the South. So to make it easier on the children, we substitute “n” in cases where “c” is followed by a “k.” In economics it is known as the rule of “78’s.”

For example, “Walker, Texas Ranger” is Chunk Norris. Fried chicken is actually fried chinken. And Beckwith is really Benkwith. It is much easier to understand than that business about “eye before e except after c.”

I am no expert but I do have a Masters degree in English from North Carolina State University.

I applaud the N & O and their efforts to report the news rather than just pass along the "approved" press releases.

I live in one of the smaller towns and our newspaper is one of the "Freedom ENC" chain. Their motto is that "everything is all good!" They toe-the-line and rarely ask any questions of government or the "city fathers." Read our newspaper and you would think that these were "the best of times." The editorial board is comprised of the paper's largest advertisers, the mayor's dog and some surfer in California.

So the efforts of the N & O seem mighty spectacular.
