RE: Supporters of publicly financed elections

A public funded election option is fine. But that money should never come from taxes or fees. If locations want to have a special box on their tax forms or water bills to ask for additional money like the federal government does, than by all means let’s add this as an option. But restrictions on those not taking public funds and matching funds for those who do should be removed.

Then we will see the real support for public funded elections. Publicly funded campaigns will be limited by how much money the government agency raises each year minus the additional costs required to administer the program and then split between those who qualify to use the funds.

Voluntary participation by residents should be the only vote that decides if this program is funded or not.

… I do believe it could be a campaign slogan for some that they are beholden to no one, but that should include the bloated government too.

Given the oppression and domination of the vile Jim Hunt's legacy has affected NC, Id say TODAY would be the time to change the NC Constitution to the former control!!! He IS the grandfather of CORRUPTION in NC!
THANKS for verifying this fact, Mr. Fetzer!

This is typical of the democratic party, deny any wrong until a judge tells you different. They are so hung up on this power thing that they can not tell what is right or wrong any more. I have been a democrat for over 40 years and these people are not true democrats, in fact the democrat party is hardly a party anymore but rather like the mob.

What is really a sad day is how dead in the water Under the Dome has become since RTB moved on. This site should be jumping and would be if RTB were still here. Such a major news event and this site is dead. Miss you RTB.

It is easier to talk about principles than to live up to them. We must do better to protect the integrity of our political system.

No, Paul, I do not think they will. We have been accustomed to this and accept it as the standard. A few glitzy campaign ads and the voting public will forget all about this. I think we accept this as part of being in office. How many times have you heard people say of politicians? "They're all crooks." Many do not even vote because they fear their vote doesn't count. I think North Carolinians can accept most anything unless the politicians steal the highways. Now that would even make me mad.

Let's face it, Paul, the Dems have a built in base that they can call on to elect even the weakest of candidates. Republicans running against the Dems are fighting the house odds.......and the house always wins.

It is indeed sad but it's just the way it is. The best thing to do is to join up with the Dems and accept any table crumbs that fall your way*. It doesn't feel all that good but you do get by.

*Even though it is not a sound health practice and certainly not endorsed by the N & O, table scraps eaten off the floor can be quite enjoyable. But watch for high heeled shoes as they can hurt like heck.

This guy is out of touch with reality. This tells everyone that the Democratic Party is okay with illegal funneling of campaign contributions.

Will the Voters of North Carolina hold the Democratic Party responsible for these acts of corruption?

Nice try, but I think that the Democratic party trying to disassociate itself from corruption in North Carolina is like trying to say that there are two different colors of red in a ketchup bottle.

I was talking to my neighbor about this. My neighbor is a former LEO in the county. My neighbor snickered up his/her sleeve about DA Willoughby.

Is DA Willoughby trustworthy?

Did Easley pull another one?

Not defending one way or the other...but the fine was not against NCDP per se but since the Easley campaign apparently "tainted" the funds by soliciting donors to give to the NCDP as a round-about way to give to the Easley campaign, there was no fine against anything the NCDP did, but since they had the "tainted" funds, then they had to give them up.

Not saying anything about any future revelations, but think Mr. Whalen's statement passes the "straight face" test.
