Oh, the compassion for the people...dont make us PUKE, Sleazely! This cost taxpayers at least $100,000 today for 9 minutes and a revote...OUTRAGEOUS!

And, did taxpayers pay for Hackney and Rand to fly back and forth from Denver???????????????????????????????????????????????

these crooks are UNbelieveable!

Zoobatmania,

If you are going to cast aspersions about lobbists, maybe a little fact check would help. In the 2007-08 election cycle to date, BCBS PAC has contributed $65,250 to DEMOCRAT state candidates and $25,050 to Republican state candidates. That is 2 1/2 times as much money to Democrats. This was not about money except for the ties to Democrat leadership.

Excerpt from Fayetteville Observer editorial.

Wide load: Legislators should uphold veto of dangerous boat-hauling bill.

While there are plenty of demographic groups that the General Assembly shows no interest in protecting, we’re thankful that lawmakers place a top priority on protecting people who own big boats.

Because of that concern, our elected representatives are rushing to Raleigh today to make sure people who want to trailer those boats on public roads can do so, any time of the day or night, even if the boat is wider than the road’s lanes, and even if they’ve knocked back a couple beers before getting on the road.

That’s dedication.

Well Marc if there was no problem why did the highway patrol weigh in on this? moneymoneymoney

This was a done deal. The members know exactly what it's about, they don't give a rat's behind about the safety issue, they're going to see a lot of revenue in the coastal communities and they're going to have some fat coffers for their campaigns.

Rep. Arthur Williams says "the people have spoken out" on this override of Easley's veto. Which "the people" is he talking about? I am no fan of Mike Easley, but I gotta agree with him on this one. Allowing wide boats to be pulled all over the secondary roads of this state, during the day and/or night, is ludicrous. The Highway Patrol has spoken out against it, and I can't see any good reason to allow it.

This is simply one more example of special-interest legislation winning out in our state Capitol....one more example of "business as usual" in Raleigh. The lawmakers hide behind this "the people have spoken" crap every time. Most of "the people" in this state have no clue what goes on in the legislature, and just accept whatever comes down the pike.

Michael Thompson

Again, just look at the vote. This wasn't about party lines.
Daves isn't just blatantly hypocritical but consistently ineffective.

I agree with isaac, I think this is stupid, but Republicans can hardly cry foul when it comes to accepting the money of big lobbyists.

We'll make them a deal, they get rid of BCBS lobbyists, we'll get rid of boat lobbyists.

Well, I ain't pleased about the session either, but the GOP is just as closely tied to the boaters. The vote wasn't along party lines.

Well, taxpayers are certainly paying for these people to have to come back for the General Assembly Session. Who do you THINK pays for that?

We can't let something like human safety interfere with a fat cat's hobbies. And god forbid they get a ticket -- like they were some ordinary schmuck or something. Boy there's got to be a LOT of money pouring in from a set of rich jerks to a set of political jerks.

I guess they figure the state highway patrol just opposed it for the heck of it. What do they know about highway safety anyway? Everyone knows that when you're pulling something on a trailer, the trailer maintains a perfectly straight line down the road and that every driver will drive that perfect line, right?
