Drilling for natural gas and oil is a lot cheaper than erecting wind turbines off the coast.Last time I looked we live in a free society and can drive anything we deem fit to our lifestyle..I know all the rabid libs. would prefer we all just bicycle, unless you are a politician, or "gated lib." and can afford jets! Its nice to see Hagan represent what the MAJORITY of North Carolinian's want!

"Drill baby drill" is not an energy policy. We import 2/3 of our oil... we would have to TRIPLE domestic production in order to stop importing oil. We ain't never gonna stop importing oil as long as Americans decide they want to drive gas guzzling SUVs. If Americans really cared about energy security and not buying oil from unfriendly countries, they would get rid of their gas guzzlers. How many SUV drivers don't even understand the hypocrisy of driving a gas guzzler with a "support our troops" magnet on the rear hatch?

manamongst, unless you pay for the site server interested can post all of the pickens plan "crap" he wants to. He certainly doesn't have to listen to you, who probably doesn't even understand why the two party system is necessary. I suppose you want every senator and representative to be a democrat, or to have extreme liberal views regardless of what anyone else in America wants. What is a "Republican Enabler" to one man is a Moderate Democrat who doesn't wear a tin-foil hat to another man :).

I don't think the Pickens plan is crap. What is your solution?
You are right about Hagan though, She is a waffler.
I'm NOT a Paultard, not that there's anything wrong with that.
In NC, to a republican a liberal is any one to the left of Hitler!

Even the Dems in NC are waaaay too conservative for me.

Get out of here will that Pickens plan crap, that's all we need is another Paultard trollin about. I'm not opposed to her keeping the door open for less environmentally intrusive extraction methods. But she has already disapointed me when she just arbitrarily jumped on that Evan Bayh Blue Dog RINO train crap he half-bakedly concocted a week or so ago. Seriously they need to firmly shake the hell out of these republican enablers and apologists.

Musical Quiz: Who sang "we won't be fooled again" ?

I recall another part of the song as well: "Look at the new boss. Same as the old boss."

Disappointing, but not unexpected.

Well, that would be far preferable to an offshore collection of 400-feet-tall wind turbines.

Voice_of_Reason,
Katrina caused the loss of 113 oil platforms, and caused 124 offshore spills:

http://www.mms.gov/tarprojects/581/44814183_MMS_Katrina_Rita_PL_Final%20Report%20Rev1.pd

And last I checked, southern Louisiana isn't exactly the type of economic juggernaut that many places are striving to become.

I hope we drill. The worry people have is unfounded. I lived in southern Louisiana for many years. Offshore drilling brings many economic benefits to an area. Very good paying jobs would include boat building, fabrication, transportation, and of course many oil production related jobs. Enviromentalists should be aware that there have been very, very few environmental accidents in offshore drilling in recent years. Rigs make wonderful man-made fish reefs and can be located outside of the site of tourists. Oil would be a big boost in the state's eastern economy.

So it would benefit Duke shareholders, but the company itself no longer has any holdings related to these pipelines? Is that correct?

That's not exactly deep into anything, especially drilling.

McCrory Duke offshore energy

Duke Energy has been involved with large offshore natural gas pipelines in the Gulf of Mexico and Tasmania amongst many other gas distribution systems. McCrory specifically mentions the proposed "Manteo Project" for two reasons. It's location offshore allows him to say it will be out of sight. However the overwhelming bulk of energy predicted from this area, if any, would be natural gas, not oil. Because of Duke's prominence in the gas pipeline business such a project would likely benefit Duke shareholders.

In 2007 Duke Energy renamed and spun off two natural gas businesses, Spectra Energy and DCP Midstream with shares of Duke Energy and Spectra Energy distributed to Duke Energy shareholders.

DCP Midstream is owned jointly by Spectra Energy and ConocoPhillips and is "one of the nation's largest natural gas gatherers and processors, the largest natural gas liquids (NGLs) producer and one of the largest NGL marketers in the U.S. " It was previously know as "Duke Energy Field Services" a joint venture between Duke Energy and ConocoPhillips.

Gulf Stream Natural Gas System is owned jointly by Williams Energy and Spectra Energy.
