Some people in San Diego liked Raffaldini's wines.

Let's give credit where credit is due and not criticize the wine just because some of us have a petty political axe to grind.

The gift was very appropriate, showing a cultural connection between the United States and Italy --- wine made in North Carolina by an Italian-American family, using an Italian varietal grape, and presented in a wood case made from old flooring from the Oval Office.

Lets face it, right now NC wine is critically an up and coming interest, but not considered good by any means. Thats not to say the NC can not produce outstanding wine. But it is going to take another 5-20 years of work to get there... especially considering the values available from outside NC.

Well, given that the only wines that really characterize NC would be Scuppernong wines or Muscadine wines, and I'm certain an Italian as high-falutin' as Berlusconi would turn his nose up at our sweet native creations.

it will be laughed out of Italy...besides they should be embarrassed to have their wine presented by a tyrannical dictator.

why wasn't the wine chosen one that characterizes NC? Do you think an Italian is going to think an Italian transplanted wine is going to be better than the Italian original? I thought gifts were suppose to represent the country you represent.....Obama is representing the US, isn't he?...oh, never mind.

Personally, I am most mortified to be named a "Sinner" by Government! They run the great gambling institution of the Education Lottery. They - well you read the news - but isn't Greed one of the Seven Deadlies? As much money as the lottery is making on poor folks' bill money, our children should be riding to school in stretch limos, yet teacher's still can't get the supplies they need! Smoking and alcohol are not mentioned though I suppose overindulgence can qualify as Gluttonny.... I could rant in 100 different directions here, and probably will elsewhere, however I will finish with this: To be judged by some elite group that are clearly not of my world is offensive, and as sin is a word associated with the bible, and judging of others is clearly a no-no there, I want them to be rounded up to pay my share of the tax.

I find it interesting that nowhere in this survey/discussion is there any mention of taxing soft-drinks. With our current epidemic of childhood obesity and type-2 diabetes as well as the inability of Medicaid to adequately fund dental care, that seems to be a logical "sin" to tax. These bottles/cans of high fructose corn syrup sweetened liquid candy have no redeeming value.

You have to be kidding. My response was a reasonable interpretation of your post.

Your last post made no sense whatsoever...

'I will admit that my post made no sense at all. Not to be too critical but your response didn't seem to make much sense to me either.

What I was trying to say is that if you tax us sinners much more.....then we will not have any money left over to give to the church. And by not giving money to the church we will be condemned to be sinners with no hope of salvation.

I'm not sure what you were saying but I'm sure I would agree with you if I could understand it. '

I am beginning to think there is something neurologically wrong with you....

How do the responses here compare to Elon's Poll regarding the proposed 'sin tax' increases?

Filtering out the comic responses, it looks like this:

N&O bloggers: 1-2 in support tax increase, 9 oppose.

That breaks down to something like this:

15 percent support tax increase, 85 percent oppose.

Compare to Elon's Poll below:

Liquor tax: 78 percent support tax increase, 18 percent oppose

Wine tax: 76 percent support increase, 20 percent oppose

Cigarette tax: 73 percent support increase, 23 percent oppose

Beer tax: 72 percent support increase, 23 percent oppose

So is the Elon poll correct?

Re: To domewatcher

Anyone who wants a profile on a liberal, read this. I have included come clarification on what domewatcher means:

I do not think that we should raise alcohol taxes straight across the board. The tax on alcohol should be tied to one's income or "lot in life."

('lot in life' is something one is not responsible for. It just happens to them. The thinking is people have no ability to choose. They are victims)

Poor people drink because they are distressed over their wretchedness. Rich people drink because they are happy they were born rich or either married a rich girl.

(Note that there is no explanation of how people attain wealth ultimately other than getting it from others (Parents or spouse). If pushed to explain how the wealth was attained, the liberal answer is that the wealth was stolen from the poor. Hard work and providing goods and services people want of course is simply a myth.)

So the poor man's drinking is somewhat medicinal while the rich man is celebrating his good fortune. Let's not further throw off on the poor man. Give him a break. An alcohol tax will never hurt a rich man.

(to my simple mind, no one who drinks because they are miserable is doing much medicinal good for themselves. Especially if it is in lieu of figuring out how to become a productive member of society and doing the hard work of creating a life they are happy with. You know, the American dream is available to anyone who wants to pursue it. You just have to get off your ass and make it happen, not wait for someone to give it to you).

Let's try to be fair!

(You don't know the meaning of fair, dumbwatcher.)
