Gosh. When I quote conservatives, liberals cry foul. When I quote liberals, conservatives cry foul.

Guess I'll just quote Munger from now on.

You are quoting someone from BlueNC? Ryan, your kidding right?
My opinion aside they have a reputation as being extreme, radical, and downright mean-spirited.

Typical "conservative" thinking. The commenter says "paving roads" is a legitimate function of government, but public transit apparently doesn't make the list. "Public safety" (presumably police and fire) is on the list, but no doubt environmental protection is not. I imagine that regulation of the stock market would find its way onto his approved government function list--but oversight of health insurance? Horrors! In other words, if it subsidizes his activities, it's a legitimate government function. If it helps poorer folks, it's not.

I think the question is: What should the scope of Government be?

Dalton's answer is it should be in every possilbe pore of our bodies - typical liberal thinking.

Sure we should provide top flight education to our citizens, pave roads, and provide for the public safety.

But is it Goverment's function to subsidize Biofuels and through some haphazard process, randomly choose companies to subsidize for "creating" jobs for North Carolinians?

I say no. And I believe we could do a lot better job with government's core functions if we weren't wasting time and money on expensive porkbarrell projects that have nothing to do with educating our kids, paving our roads and providing for the public's safety.

"The question now is, if Education, Jobs and Biofuels are irresponsible, just what would Linda Daves and Robert Pittenger like our state to look like?"

Only the 0.01% of the population who knows the size of the budget can put these numbers in perspective. When reporting budget numbers, you should always attempt to provide that perspective. Few of us really know the difference between millions, billions and trillions.

I will write some more posts about the spending, but I don't agree that listing the spending is making someone look bad.

A certain segment of the readership will disapprove of any government spending, I suppose, but others may be just as likely to approve of their priorities. And still others may note that $277 million is a little over 1 percent of the state budget.

You mentioned in an earlier post how this is an inaccurate measure of what members are actually trying to accomplish. Not everyone here reads every post, so you ought to keep that disclaimer in all future posts in this series.

That is, keep in the disclaimer, unless your intention is simply to make Dems look bad.

This is a continuation of OUT OF CONTROL spending by Dalton and Hagan.
