Can we get that fella to be Governor? I can't understand how Guv. Purdue wants to protect jobs by taxing us to death. Message to Guv. Purdue: stay outta my wallett, my backyard and my cooler!!!

Really? I could have sworn it was Democrats exploiting voters for power, and now they're getting thrown in jail left and right as a result.

The GOP "priorities" are the same this year as they are every year. Serve the rich and powerful, hate the middle class and poor, attack minorities and attempt to frighten the voters into put them into office.

It looks to me like it's one of many priorities, Melissa. Their top priorities are stopping Sleasley's increases in cigarette and alcohol taxes. I'm ok with the cigarette tax increase, but the alcohol tax increase is ridiculous, because NC already has one of the highest, in addition to state-run ABC stores. I would love to see privatization of spirits become a priority.

I wonder why an amendment on banning gay marriage is a priority with a down-turned economy? Couldn’t the GOP better serve their constituents by serving them in a more proactive capacity? I doubt that a laid off textile worker's biggest concern is banning gay marriage.

As a State employee this is a slap in the face and an insult to all employees when we get 1.5% increase. Gov. Easly should have at least given us 4% increase considering the gas and food prices going thru the roof plus increase in our health plan for next year. Shame on you Easly. He gave us a one week paid vacation, you know what ALL state employees should do?? We should all call in sick the same week and let him see if our jobs are as important as these teachers.

Disappointed.

Re: N.C. has fourth-highest beer tax

Supposedly this tax will assist in paying for DUI/DWI enforcement? I dare say that beer is not the sole agent that is responsible for Drivers Under the Influence. Rather it is more closely linked to social problems/addiction/liquor sales in the state. NC however promotes the sale of liquor from its state dictated stores and therefore creates/exasperbates the problem with DUI. Beer sales is only a fraction of the problem but will be singled out to be the sole revenue source for the state for this and similar programs. The Governor should look at other ways to fund certain programs such as to reduce waste or to tax the main culprit of the problem. Where is all that money going from the gambling addiction in this state...the lottery? How did we ever get along with out it? It should be alarming that NC has the 4th highest beer tax in the country as it stands today and that has not curbed DUI arrests in the state but rather it has sweetened the honeypot to be wasted.

Perhaps I have a drinking problem, although I do not drink, but I know that the tax increase is ridiculous. Easley is just trying to cover his butt before leaving office, because when the next governor takes office it will become apparent as to how ineffective he has been.
