If a county has a teacher with 2 or 3 assistants and a couple of aides, that sounds more like cronyism within the county than at the state level. Most of our waste in education comes from top-heavy boards with superintendents that reward their favorites. Unless you are around education and in the schools, you really have no idea what goes on there. As for teachers unions that some of you just loathe, if it were not for the teachers unions, the system would be a mess with political hiring and firing with each party going in and out of power. The students would ultimately pay the price for that.

Generally speaking of being generally accepted.....

"Cecil Banks, an NCAE lobbyist, said it was generally accepted that $1.5 billion in tax increases would be needed to avoid layoffs or increasing the number of students in each class."

Other things that I feel are pretty much "generally accepted:"

It’s generally accepted that hogs love slop.
It’s generally accepted that the big ‘possum walks just before daybreak.
It’s generally accepted that diamonds are a girl’s best friend unless she is a teacher…..then it’s a lobbyist.
It’s generally accepted that lobbying is more profitable than teaching.
It’s generally accepted that lobbying is more fun than teaching.
It’s generally accepted that teaching someone to lobby is better than teaching them how to fish.
It’s generally accepted that EOG’s are a tool to increase education spending.
It’s generally accepted that the more secretaries in the central office the higher the test scores for dementia.
It's generally accepted that the lower the class size the fewer the parents to have to deal with.
It’s generally accepted that nothing much ever changes with state government.

Obama has given away portions of GM and Chrysler to the UAW. Maybe Gov Perdue can give the school system to the NCAE. If the quality of the education was as good as the quality of the NCAE lobbyists then our schools would be #1 in the nation. I have always thought that pandering usually resulted in some type payoff. Will that be paper or plastic?

Hey Perdue, Any Press Conferences?

Why is Beverly going just to speeches across the state where the majority of the audience is NCAE union members on a controlled basis? Has she even given a press conference recently or since she has been in office? Beverly has a lot to answer for and all of NC's citizens deserve direct answers. If she did speak directly to all of her consituents, she would obviously start with "let me be honest with you" (meaning everything I have said up to now has been a lie - which is certainly true!)

She will be greeted with jeers, protests and middle fingers in Asheville today! The absolute NERVE of this biotch to hire Bill Harrison to take June Atkinson's elected job! BEV should be extricated from her job immediately! UNFIT for SERVICE, and WAY too stupid for the job!

MORE CORRUPTION WITHOUT INTERRUPTION!

GET your children OUT of government screwls as fast as you can!

Perdue: NCAE puppet

WHEW! I feel a lot better that a paid lobbyist for the teacher's union has said that it is generally accepted that we need to raise taxes by $1.5billion. Care to share some names?

And we should feel comforted that Beverly has just hired another NCAE union official as her education advisor, despite having only 7 years experience as a teacher and huge budget problems. Sounds like the NCAE has direct access to Beverly and they are taking full advantage of it. Scary!

In my county we only have one school, and it is the largest employer in the county. The reason for this is every teacher has two or three assistants, and a couple of aides. Class size is very small, but the staff at the school is enormous. The rest of our county's ecomomy consists of new home contruction, and thats about it. What little manufacturing we had left during the Clinton/Hunt adminstrations with nafta. The folks who were moving up here from florida and atlanta and building new homes either can't afford to come,or they no longer find north carolina attractive. So tell me what bev's taxes does for my county, everyone can't work for the school system. So we will have the best educated bunch of starving people in the state. On the bright side all those DOT guys leaning on their shovels can bury us. She can't convince me this can't be solved by spending cuts.

Governor Perdue was quoted above as saying:

"I don't believe we can cripple education in this state."

Is the Governor selling us short? Personally....and from what I have seen I would say we have done an excellent job of crippling education in this state. I wonder if throwing more money at the "system" is the answer. How about throw in a little reform.

If our educational system ain't crippled then it is certainly limpin' a little bit.

This is pathetic. Governor Perdue is nothing more than a puppet for the NEA. They say jump and she asks "how high?" Most Americans are cutting their budgets and Governor Perdue wants massive tax increases to save the economic future!? How about lower taxes in North Carolina to attract businesses and high wage jobs that will broaden the tax base and leave North Carolina with more tax revenue? With lower taxes and a more broad tax base, the state will not suffer so much from economic fluctuations.

Governor Perdue is an empty suit. What about cutting the multi-million dollar pier that the state is funding in Basnight's district? What about telling the truth about our budget deficit, which is $3 billion and not $4.3 billion. The $4.3 billion figure does not include the 1.3 billion in federal stimulus given to the state - the figure is simply a lie.

There are so many other places we could make cuts. I know people who work for the state, and they tell me! A great deal of state employees do nothing most of the day. Some are so old in age and time on the job that tech knowledge has passed them long go. They appear to be waiting to die! This Governor or nor any other is going to make the real hard choices, not when taxes can just be raised! I think if we make this a one term job for her and anyone esle who is affraid to make the hard choices, we might have a shot at really change. I voted for her, and I am just about ready for more change, her!

And these Unions all believe in the public check card instead of secret ballots. Oh that reminds me, why is it ok for Democrats in Congress to choose their members by secret ballot but not ok for American workers to select whether to have a union by a secret ballot?
