I call bull. Yes, Civitas' questions provoke a gut reaction, but it's clearly meant to be slanted one way, so what they're trying to find out is: do Republicans' arguments sway voters one way, and then they pass the results off as what the people really think. Their polls don't present a replication of the political environment of an election, where you get visceral arguments from both sides on various issues and voters get to decide which extremity tugs their heartstrings more. Real pollsters who are earnestly trying to find out which issues and arguments move voters use split samples with arguments from both sides.

riverrd can you please back up your statements of fact with some facts?

Would you instead believe a poll paid for by let's say the MoveOn.org or the DailyKos?

And calling Republicans or conservatives names is just one of your left wing distraction techniques. If you can prove a point with atleast 2 to 3 unrelated sources then you have backing. Even if the context is not right you still can make a valid point. It is time for liberals and progressives to step up to the plate. yes you guys won on many different levels. Other than distraction from you failures, how is the continual smears and attacks against us helpful?

Civitas and johnny locke are both just fronts for the MINORITY Flat-Earth republicans. You can not trust their so-called research nor their so-called "findings". And yet the Corporate Media reports on them and provides them coverage like they really matter!!

Ive often thought the ELON polling was a little spongey at best...they need to delve into REAL questions more, instead of generic, lightweight stuff.

Civitas and John Locke are the groups that phrase things much better for the real answers.

With all the embedded lieberal democrat domination in NC, anything else is totally refreshing, but most of the imbeciles are just too dumb to get it.
Thats why NC remains so oppressed by the party of SLAVERY.

yeah it's (heavily) republican leaning. I didn't think they were hiding their intentions, it's informative and useful and accessible - it seems fair. (not to say it seems balanced, or non-partisan, just... fair)

I don't think Elon has the same usefulness. But that's just me, thinking.

civitas and locke have always been candid and honest about their partnership to promote the gop and gop candidates - hayes openly admits that his polling is designed to reinforce gop messaging

As if college students don't have enough to do already. Some need every extra hour they can, just so they can work to pay their way through college. Senator Rand may have had a fat cat Uncle pay his way through, but I paid my own way through Meredith College with a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Many of the babysitters we use are doing the same.

Senator Rand needs to take his head out of the sand and go visit some of these hard working college students.

I am glad to see this being pushed to the back burner, but remember, what Senator Rand usually wants, Senator Rand usually gets.

Re: Bill would require student tutoring

I am a student at Western Carolina University, which is a part of the UNC system. I'm sorry--last time I checked, I hadn't broken any laws or been found guilty of any crimes. So, Mr. Rand, why should I be demoted to the level of a convicted criminal and be ordered to do community service? I will gladly tack that on to my sixteen course hours and student government involvement as well as my three--yes, three--part-time jobs, not to mention all of the community service I already do with my fraternity and leadership programs. It won't affect you or any of the other people who vote yes for it; just something else you can add to your great voting records. Also, I would like to see you approach a professor who has been tenured the last thirty years and tell them that they need to suddenly start incorporating community service into their curriculums. ...nothing but another self-serving, haughty, and completely unreasonable initiative that will probably pass because it looks good on record and helps people like Senator Rand sleep with the clear conscience that the world is a better place because of their selfless, civic-minded actions.

My son , who is a UNC junior, barely has time to eat. He has to attend class, study and work so he can attend college. College students have very little time and I do not think they should do the volunteer work that parent's and other's do not do. Does Tony Rand have time to volunteer in the school system? Also, I have been actively involved in our school's PTA and parent's really get the feeling at our school that they are not really welcome. This bill is not a good idea and should not be required of hardworking college students.

A better suggestion would be financial aid--preferably a grant since it sucks to pay off loans--for those who volunteer to tutor. Requiring tutoring also creates the problem of transportation. I never had a car while I was on Carolina's campus. The schools would have to do a good job setting up carpools and reimbursing students for gas.

20 hours seems a little steep, and he might want to work in allowances for alternatives like working with the homeless, as someone else mentioned. Not everyone is suited to tutor. But it's not a bad idea. In fact, it might instill in some the desire to become teachers--if only the legislature would scrap some pork and raise teacher pay all at once to the national average.
