Re: Is Perdue push-polling? (Campaign: No)

I agree with Towns that this is not responsible reporting.

The article should give the reader the information in-text they need to decide for themselves the answer to the question at the top "Is Perdue Push Polling?"

"Blogger says yes, campaign says no" doesn't cut it.

Such an article should include an in-text definition of push polling, and either some sort of assessment about whether or not the poll meets that definition (it's not bias or rocket science) or some assessment by experts. All this provides is "he said, she said."

The article leaves readers with the definite impression that this was in fact a push poll run by Perdue that a goodhearted citizen journalist discovered, and that the campaign is just denying it. A finger-wag for the Dome on this one.

Re: Towns: When is a poll pushing?

Not a good poll, but not a sleazy "push poll." Read the JOMC blog linked above (or google "push poll"). These are all legitimate questions for the campaign to determine whether their free book campaign was successful and what the views are of their supporters (and non-supporters) with regard to controversial questions.

Here are some poll questions from Fred Smith

Here are the questions from a Fred Smith poll I got a few weeks back. I wrote them down as quick as I could. Not sure if this is a push poll, but I didn't think it was too scientific to have the questions end with "do you intend to vote for Fred Smith for Governor". For the record, I said I was voting for Smith, although I am currently undecided.

Do you vote in North Carolina?

Do you intend to vote in Republican primary for governor in 2008?

If your choices for Governor are Fred Smith, Bob Orr, Pat McCrory and Bill Graham, do you intend to vote for Fred Smith for Governor?

Now, if your choice for governor was only between 2 candidates, Fred Smith and Pat McCrory, would you vote for Fred Smith?

Recently, Fred Smith mailed you a free book entitled a little extra effort, did you receive your free copy of the book?

Have you had an opportunity to read it?

Would you like a copy of it?

Are you Pro Life?

Do you believe marriage is between one man and one woman?

Do you support your taxes not being raised and possibly cut?

Do you believe that illegal immigration a problem?

Do you support the 2nd Amendment and the right to bear arms?

Then it asked a bunch of questions about age, sex, and things like that.

That's not push-polling. No, seriously. It's not. I don't know who they're polling for, but this is a legitimate poll.

I wrote down the questions of Walter Jones' taxpayer funded poll. Ryan, can I send them to you for your story or should I just send it to Mark and Karen?

Too bad we don't have a device on Walter Jones office and others in DC that use "constituent calls" and "franked mail" for blatent campaigning with our tax dollars. Push polls probably inform the ingnorant voter more often than not of the real facts. You sure won't get that from the liberal media, the N & O is no exception.

Wow. I wish you would have given me this idea before Walter Jones did his poll a few weeks ago. Only problem was that it was paid for with taxpayer money! It asked questions that you couldn't help but agree with him with. Yeah, that would have been a great piece for Under the Dome. I'll rush out and get my recorder. Keep up the good work Ryan.
