you can't always tell gender from name

"We also know that among low- to medium-information voters, one of the only things you can tell about a candidate from looking at the ballot is gender. (You cannot necessarily do the same with race.)"

Ha, when I was working at an early voting site in 2004 for the Wake County Board of Elections, one of my tasks on a rotating basis was to assist voters who were having trouble marking their ballots. One elderly lady had a list with her, said she was having trouble filling in the boxes, and asked me to mark in the choices. She volunteered to me that other than president, she was voting ONLY for women. (I did not ask her any questions, she was chatty so I listened.) One of the choices she had me mark was for a candidate whose first name was "Kris". That Kris is male.

You're right. Still, among low-information voters, two women would cancel each other out a little, I think.

"insurance commissioner and labor commissioner. Coincidentally, those were two races with no female candidates"

Actually, Labor Commissioner had two female candidates. One of them, Mary Fant Donnan, will advance to a runoff.

Re: Goodwin's TV ad

Thank you, liam! I am quite pleased with the work of my media team ... and especially pleased by the response to my TV ad's message.

In response to your question, my TV ad has been running already on various networks in North Carolina for approximately one week (maybe more). And, of course, there are always more networks and channels! This being the very first campaign to opt into the pilot public financing program for Insurance Commissioner, funds for all participating candidates during both the primary election and the general election are limited/capped ... by State law. We may use up to the maximum funds allowed by the public financing law. Admittedly, the cap is too low for full media output.

Also, this TV ad has been getting lots of play via hits on my campaign website and other sites, etc., that have been kind enough to include it as part of their voter education efforts.

Fortunately, a great many organizations and political groups have been inviting 1, 2 or all 3 candidates for candidates' fora during the last month. Some of these various folks have also videotaped remarks from 1, 2 or all 3 candidates for playback before their groups and/or on websites. Their efforts are also key factors in the necessity of enhancing and promoting voter education regarding the Insurance Commissioner candidates.

For more detailed information about my campaign and the deep, broad and diverse array of endorsements of my candidacy, please go to www.waynegoodwin.org ... You will see that the contrast between the Goodwin for Insurance Commissioner campaign and the opposing camp is quite great.

Re: Long not running for re-election

I agree. Why not use "unsuccessful" instead of "failed"? "Failed", though technically accurate, seems a little subjective for a news reporter. Even "lost" sounds better and more objective than "failed." By the way, Wayne Goodwin ran a terrific campaign in 2004, and had a fantastic campaign team. He campaigned in every county (unlike his opponent), had bipartisan support, and outfundraised his opponent, who happened to be the only statewide incumbent Republican at the time. But for the less-than-expected percentages for the Kerry-Edwards presidential campaign in NC, then Goodwin and several of the down-ballot Council of State races would have reversed in 2004 and been in the Democratic column.

We can only guess who and how many would have filed to run if Long had made this announcement in the clear and before the start of the filing season instead in its final hours.
