Re: How much debt did Dems have?

Let's look objectively here. For Jerry to say that there was approximately $650,000 in party debt when he took office is not an insult to Scott's prior work as a fiscally responsible party leader. This is a statewide organization with high costs. Similarly, most responsible and fiscally healthy organizations maintain an ongoing reserve--I think that the $426,000 figure would fulfill that role. Finally, by Scott's figures, the party had $425,000 in existing identified debt at the time Jerry came in. (Yes, a mortgage balance and incurred legal expenses constitute money owed--i.e., debt.) Since the legal wrangles were "ongoing", it seems entirely likely that the expenses there were continuing to mount.

Under the circumstances, it seems to me that the distinction is likely more one of semantics than strenuous dispute over substance. I hear no implication of poor management by Scott. At the same time, for the party today to have paid off its mortgage, eliminated its balance on legal fees, while covering the expenses of two enormous (and enormously successful) two-year election cycles simultaneously, seems to me to reflect outstanding efforts led by Jerry.

So chill, amigos. A good job has been done overall.

Re: How much debt did Dems have?...The Facts...

First, let me say that Chairman Meek has done an outstanding job over the last four years to organize and build our party.

As for the "debt" that he inherited, these are the facts:

The public record (FEC and SBOE) reflects the following as of December 31, 2004 (just before Meek assumed the chairmanship):

- The NCDP had over $426,000 cash on hand with no operational debt whatsoever.

- The public record further reflects a $300,000 mortgage on a recently renovated 10,000 square foot building worth over $2,000,000.

In addition, there was approximately $125,000 in incurred expense related to the then ongoing election contests/recounts involving the Superintendent of Public Instruction and Commissioner of Agriculture races from the just ended 2004 General Election.

The $650,000-$700,000 debt figure cited in the post is simply incorrect. Thanks for the opportunity to set the record straight.

AGREED! Hey, Bob Hall, where are you on this? We all know that Bob has his own political agenda...

Fyi:

Scott Falmlen, Principal Nexus Strategies
Falmlen has an extensive record of success in managing major political campaigns and party organizations.

For over twenty years, he has served as a campaign advisor, manager, or state party executive director involving competitive races for Governor, the United States Senate, the United States House of Representatives, the state legislature, and numerous local offices.

Most recently, Falmlen directed the North Carolina Democratic Party’s 2006 Coordinated Campaign effort that resulted in the expansion of Democratic majorities in both houses of the North Carolina General Assembly; that successfully unseated an eight term incumbent Republican member of the United States House of Representatives; and that came within 329 votes of unseating another entrenched Republican incumbent congressman.

Falmlen served as the Executive Director of the North Carolina Democratic Party from 1999-2005 leading the party through Governor Mike Easley’s election and re-election campaigns and overseeing the Party’s efforts in the 2000, 2002, 2004 elections for President, US Senate, US House of Representatives, and the North Carolina General Assembly. During that time, Falmlen also served as President of the National Association of State Democratic Executive Directors.

Prior to his work in North Carolina, Falmlen served as the Executive Director of the Florida Democratic Party from 1995-1999. He also served as the Chief of Staff to the Majority Leader of the Florida Senate and served as Director of External Affairs/Political Director for Florida Governor Lawton Chiles.

Falmlen also has proved adept at understanding and complying with complex campaign finance laws and regulations while at the same time creating party operation and campaign plans that take advantage of all available legal campaign finance options.

Scott Falmlen received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science with Minors in Business and History from Georgetown College.

This should be the headline in the story - online and print:
The Democratic Governors Association confirmed that it gave $500,000 to the Alliance for North Carolina.

These reports aren't going to show up at the SBOE until 4:55 pm today. Then none of the principals involved will be able to be found to comment over the weekend. And a half researched story gets tucked into the paper Saturday or Sunday and the media moves on to other things next week. Meantime we never do find out anything about the "Alliance" funding for their false misleading negative attack ad.

Here's the problem

Whatever you think about it the RGA PAC clearly lists its donors.

The DGA has set up a series of front groups to avoid releasing the names of the people actually funding the ad.

Today's story's will say "Alliance funded by DGA" which is what the DGA wants. The public still will not know who contributed the funds to the DGA that were passed through to the "alliance".

The Democrats, who I will note again have been bashing McCrory for raising $800 dollars of PAC money with the assistance of the News and Observer and other media outlets, have set up a shell game to avoid disclosing the source of their funding.

We'll be able to tell how far in the tank the N&O etc. are for the Democrats by the level of vigor shown in attempting to unravel the specific groups funding the "Alliance's" false and misleading negative attack ads.

What a surprise!! The DGA gave $500,000 to an arm of the campaign of "Positive Bev". Yet her mouthpiece ripped McCrory for getting far less than that from the RGA. Talk about hypocracy.
