"None of us governors are expecting Washington to send us a magic bullet and end this"

Well, um, yes you most certainly are. And why not let those silly Federal tax payers pay the tab for the last 8+ years of NC's unrepentant legislative/exectutive spending. Much better than us paying for it cause, you know, they're not really us, they're them. Right?

Change you can count on...and your children can pay for, right here in NC.

Everyday more people sour on this special interest payback. We have lost over $70 billion in value off ther first $700 billion bailout passed hy Bush and the Democrats. This package is even worse and needs to be trimmed down to tax cuts and immediate job creation.

Congress retreat. Guess all politicians are clueless as to how bad it looks while slapping the financial worlds hand and then going off on your own retreat at resorts.

How about Barbara Mandrell instead? Or, Dolly Parton who defended her crook brother Randy!

She should be ashamed to go begging the taxpayers for money, when her party has kept NC in slavery for decades!

Getting money from the feds for Medicaid to balance the budget is well within what a chief executive in NC is charged with doing. Yeah, that balancing the budget constitutional thingie.

So sorry you're sad that a woman is doing the job she was elected to, but McCrory lost.

Hmmm. There must be some mistake. Looks to me that one of NC's govt's private jets is heading north!

http://flightaware.com/live/flight/N122NC/history

No way Bev would be stoopid enough to take a private jet to go beg for scraps from the DC pigs, right? I mean, the press would have a field day, right? Remember how the press had a field day on the Big3 execs for doing the same thing? Nope, No hypocrisy here!

I wonder if there was champagne and caviar on board? Of course she deserves it. Because... she uhhhh... did..... the state is doing so well.... there's a surplus and we need a way to squander it?

OK, anyone who doesn't get it: it costs more to just to taxi this pig out to the runway than it would to fly round trip on a commercial flight. Way to save, Bev!

You can appreciate, I'm sure, that without knowing a person or his/her background well, one could not readily assume that s/he is being sarcastic on such a subject.

And anyway, I think ya stuck it in here to rile up some traffic from your more reliable die-hard Southerners in here.

Confusing excerpts, RTB

I'm not entirely sure from the excerpts whether it is the Florida professor or Kromm of the Institute of Southern Studies or perhaps someone either might be addressing who who seems to indicate that the South can be defined by its stereotypes, but that's the impression I get when I hear derisive references to an "anti-education" outlook and Jesse Helms. I've been as critical of Helms as anyone else, but the suggestion that he actually despised universities, labs or libraries or that Southerners don't "cotton to book learning" tells me that the commenter is more interested in dwelling in stereotypes than serious contemplation of what the South is, was or is becoming.

It reminds me a little bit of African Americans being told they aren't "black" if they don't speak a certain jargon or hold a specific political perspective. It isn't that a given person isn't African American (or that North Carolina isn't in the South); it's that the person making that suggestion is him or herself lacking in perception of what it means to be an African American or what it means to be part of the South.

The quotation marks around the text in blue suggest that those are the remarks being quoted from Kromm. Is the final paragraph in blue (which is not contained in quotation marks) from Roberts?

My fellow Americans, did you

My fellow Americans, did you think about the issues in play before you cast your vote in the November 4 election? It would be nice to think that most of you did, but I know that the reality of how much people think about their political choices is less than studied. Many of you may even have studied more about whether you should take out a payday advance than who to vote for. As a case in point, check out this brief audio snippet from a recent episode of “The Howard Stern Show,” posted courtesy of BPM Deejays of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Roving Reporter Sal sought the opinions of men and women on the street, to see whether they supported Barack Obama or John McCain for President. Admittedly, they were attempting to gauge whether African-Americans would automatically vote for Obama simply because he’s black. That point is driven home by the location Sal obtains his samples from: Harlem, New York. However, the trick Sal employs in his interviews is telling. By reversing the candidates’ positions on issues like the pro-life argument, stem cell research, the war in Iraq and who Sarah Palin is – attributing McCain’s positions to Obama – Sal gets people to admit that they support all kinds of ideas that Obama wants little or nothing to do with. He exposes the ugly truth that many of us are ignorant when it comes to the issues. We parrot popular opinions and flow along with our peer groups. But when it comes to things like presidential elections and your vote, I hope you thought about it considerably. The fact that most of us did not think for Obama’s point of view is the biggest mistake we made. Now, our chosen leader is in his position and right to decide for our country’s economical development. Let’s just watch, whether it will cause a good or bad for the United States.

Re: Guillory: Seaboard South is different

It's a good thing Guillory isn't a music writer. If he heard a country band play, "My Window Faces ther South," he might just ask a followup question:

"Now which part of the South would that be--the Seaboard South or the rest of it?"

But Guillory makes an important point, interesting too from the historical perspective in that in earlier eras of American history, the "Mid-South," or sometimes the Gulf Coast South, has often led the region in economic activity and prosperity.

the most famous antislavery book before the war of southern stupidity (i had 6 ancestors killed in sc regiments) was written by a north carolinian. nothern capital funded the industrial development of nc when there was no capital here because of the stupid war. who do you think built the mills and factories that brought nc out of a small farm based economy? was it northerners who committed to make our university and community college system the best and most affordable public system in the southeast? northern companies created the jobs in the research triangle after our own "liberal" leaders had the foresight to encourage development while places like alabama were fighting to keep a large portion of their own people down.

do you really want nc to stay mired in a racist, poverty stricken past like mississippi? will that make you feel superior?
