Will someone please take the credit card away from the Democrats. They are already $560 million over 2010 budget and could be as much as $3 billion over.

What is often failed to be mentioned is how much of the taxes collected from gas fails to be used for its intended purpose - I would love to see the N&O actually do some research and publish how much of the "highway fund" gets siphoned off on non related projects - I know for sure its in the multi million dollar range (my wife works for the state DOT). I have no problems paying a reasonable tax to travel the roads - I do mind when my gas tax goes to pay for another purpose.

It's about wishful thinking and magic. Say something often enough and it becomes true, right? That's what you do when you're part of a multi-million dollar opinion manufacturing machine. You make up stuff and get bloggers and journalists to write about it. Ta-dah.

Best two out of three

Once again, Civitas has used creative questioning to produce the results they wanted. First of all, they give the respondents three choices, two of which will (later) be combined to represent the same thing: approval for drilling. But if you look at the middle, more moderate choice, which garnered a higher percent than either of the other two:

"2. Drilling for oil and natural gas should only be allowed off the coast of North Carolina if it is out of sight from the shore."

Choosing this option doesn't automatically equate to "approval". For at least some respondents anyway, this choice could easily represent the opinion, "If you're going to do it, I don't want to see it."

Most people consider themselves moderate. If given a choice between two extremes or a middle ground, they will often choose the middle, because it gives them some psychological wiggle room. Civitas knows this, and they take advantage of it.

Francis, if you're reading this, please explain how the restrictive quality of "should only be allowed" translates to "overwhelming support"?

Re: Perdue opposes offshore drilling

The oil companies are exporting crude to overseas markets and letting them drill more domestically or offshore would be a waste of our oil because we wouldn't of received any benefit. Research how much crude oil, heating oil, natural gas, LNG, diesel, and gasoline is exported from this country and you would be shocked. Lots of the oil in the Alaskan Pipeline is shipped to Japan. The oil companies say they want to build/expand more refineries and do more drilling, but I say they don't need to do either until we stop all exports. We can never be energy independent as long as we continue exporting to other countries. Offshore drilling and onshore drilling in Alaska is extremely attractive to oil companies because one offshore well can equal fifteen onshore wells in production and drilling in Alaska produces large volumes of oil. For every barrel of oil we send overseas that's another barrel of oil we have to import.

A good rule of thumb regarding oil....it always chases the dollar bill and goes to the most illogical spot.

Drilling for natural gas and oil is a lot cheaper than erecting wind turbines off the coast.Last time I looked we live in a free society and can drive anything we deem fit to our lifestyle..I know all the rabid libs. would prefer we all just bicycle, unless you are a politician, or "gated lib." and can afford jets! Its nice to see Hagan represent what the MAJORITY of North Carolinian's want!

"Drill baby drill" is not an energy policy. We import 2/3 of our oil... we would have to TRIPLE domestic production in order to stop importing oil. We ain't never gonna stop importing oil as long as Americans decide they want to drive gas guzzling SUVs. If Americans really cared about energy security and not buying oil from unfriendly countries, they would get rid of their gas guzzlers. How many SUV drivers don't even understand the hypocrisy of driving a gas guzzler with a "support our troops" magnet on the rear hatch?

manamongst, unless you pay for the site server interested can post all of the pickens plan "crap" he wants to. He certainly doesn't have to listen to you, who probably doesn't even understand why the two party system is necessary. I suppose you want every senator and representative to be a democrat, or to have extreme liberal views regardless of what anyone else in America wants. What is a "Republican Enabler" to one man is a Moderate Democrat who doesn't wear a tin-foil hat to another man :).

I don't think the Pickens plan is crap. What is your solution?
You are right about Hagan though, She is a waffler.
I'm NOT a Paultard, not that there's anything wrong with that.
In NC, to a republican a liberal is any one to the left of Hitler!

Even the Dems in NC are waaaay too conservative for me.

Get out of here will that Pickens plan crap, that's all we need is another Paultard trollin about. I'm not opposed to her keeping the door open for less environmentally intrusive extraction methods. But she has already disapointed me when she just arbitrarily jumped on that Evan Bayh Blue Dog RINO train crap he half-bakedly concocted a week or so ago. Seriously they need to firmly shake the hell out of these republican enablers and apologists.

Musical Quiz: Who sang "we won't be fooled again" ?

I recall another part of the song as well: "Look at the new boss. Same as the old boss."

Disappointing, but not unexpected.
