I am no supporter of purdue (i hope she loses big), but my wife is from New Bern, and the old bridge was ridiculous. Traffic is always heavy on the new one, and it is the intersection of Hwy 17 and Hwy 70. Two major beach highways. Plus both are slated to be turned more into an interstate type highway in the near future. The bridge was just one part of that ongoing project. If you look at any map along either of those roads, you will find that similar upgrades have been, or are being made at each bridge or intersecting major road. This is just more of North Carolinas growing pains. Did it cost a lot? yes. Are there other areas where that money is needed more, ahead of that area? Yes, and perhaps slightly debatable. There is no question that politics are playing a major role in road construction in this state, but there is also the fact that most of these roads (in eastern NC) have more travelers from the central peidmont vacationers and day trippers than any other constiuency. The best solution is to end the political favors that are meshed into the DOT transportation board process right now.
