Educating the populace?

If the question is, LITERALLY, do you approve of Perdue spending $80,000 on a trip to China...I don't think it's difficult to assume most would view it negatively. But goodness forbid an educated question was used, explaining the purpose of the China trip and the potential economic opportunities for our state (in actual dollar amounts) was used. I'm sure some folks would still signal disapproval, either b/c they have some anti-China sentiment in in general or anti-Perdue sentiment in particular, but then the poll number might actually mean something.

But, hey, it's Civitas' dime, it can do whatever it wants. It's just up to the journalists who report on it to provide some perspective.

Re: Grueling defined

So why should the names of the companies the Governor is meeting with be a secret? My understanding was that this was simply a recruiting trip not specific negotiations for an economic development deal which under existing law can be hidden from the public. If the Governor is going to the Big Apple and dangling barrels of taxpayer money in front of NY financial companies in an effort to lure them to NC, why isn't the press all over this? Were any of the representatives of these companies political contributors to the Governor's campaign? Guess we can't find out if we aren't told who she met with.

I hope it results in jobs. So many of these Dept.of Commerce junkets have not resulted in anything. Economic development is a suspect profession.

It appears to me that contray to you what folks who can only complainsay; the Governor had a full day trying to recruit jobs for North Carolina. You should be happy about that. If you had read the post you would also note that client was substituted for the name of the company because the names of the industry folks are confidential

Client meetings? What in the world are client meetings? Her only clients should be the citizens of North Carolina.

The BILLION Dollar tax increase also reduces our freedom here in NC. The more money the government takes from you the less freedom you will have. And it does cost jobs. I cannot go out and buy that new vehicle because of these tax increases. that translates through the sales guy, dealership , and auto maker. Less jobs down the whole line.

Again, she lied to the people of WNC by promising to bring her listening tour there...she did NOT.

Its time for the 51st state of Western Carolina.

Only the 0.01% of the population who knows the size of the budget can put these numbers in perspective. When reporting budget numbers, you should always attempt to provide that perspective. Few of us really know the difference between millions, billions and trillions.

I will write some more posts about the spending, but I don't agree that listing the spending is making someone look bad.

A certain segment of the readership will disapprove of any government spending, I suppose, but others may be just as likely to approve of their priorities. And still others may note that $277 million is a little over 1 percent of the state budget.

You mentioned in an earlier post how this is an inaccurate measure of what members are actually trying to accomplish. Not everyone here reads every post, so you ought to keep that disclaimer in all future posts in this series.

That is, keep in the disclaimer, unless your intention is simply to make Dems look bad.
