Although I am not a great fan of booze and cigarettes I think is quite unfair to raise taxes for paying teachers. A much more profitable thing would be drug legalization starting with marijuana. As far as I can see this would solve more problems at once.

What? The kids get a day off when their teacher gets furloughed? Anybody out there awake? Ever heard of "substitute teachers"? Do you think the kids get the day off and the subs work for free? Whatnell are these people thinking? A family member is a first-year teacher who has taken a $75 hit per paycheck but continues to go to class. I'm 62; when I went to elementary and high school (no middle schools existed then) the school year began Sept. 1 or thereabouts and ended June 1. Now the school year begins about the fourth week of August and will end June 10. Why? Teacher "work days." No teacher work days existed in the 1950s and 1960s and students and teachers managed to survive, got out for a full three months of summer vacation where kids could go on a week vacation, usually week of July 4, and had a great time at the beach or mountains (the teachers, who worked summer jobs, came back to school one week before classes began) and everybody was happy AND we got a first-class education (I can read and write the English language). As George Wallace so aptly put it, now education is being run by the smarter-than-us "pointy-headed intellek-shuls" on college campuses and the guvmint and what a fine mess we're in. Somebody should ask Obama to wave his fairy godmother's wand over this and cure public education's ills.

Would this be in addition to the House Proposal to shorten the school year by those same amounts? If so it would mean shortening the school year by 20 days over two years. We'd have the shortest school year in the country. Maybe the world....how about we cut their per diem to zero instead?

Bowles could also improve teacher education at UNC by starting charter demonstration schools at UNC campuses, along the demonstration-school idea used successfully at Elizabeth City State University.

They do lose some of the best teachers to non-government corporations who can pay better and give better benefits. That argument is proven. There are also social loafing employees anywhere you go. I would like to think that teachers police themselves through peer pressure and peer reviews. Remember before you condemn them ask yourself, "Is that a job I would do and could do well" And no I am not a teacher.

Pay increases should be on merit only. There are many sub-standard teachers who warehouse kids with "seat work" and never teach them a thing.
These teachers do not merit a raise.

Strangely enough, the governor's office has completely flipped over the issue of adjusting teacher pay for cost of living. Back in 2005, it was part of the governor's process; now he's calling it "smoke and mirrors."

Walter Dalton was a wheeler and dealer in the Senate, and quite a good one. But it's hard to campaign on that type of experience in the year of Obama. Dalton's missing the boat here. He's running a standard NC campaign in an extraordinary election year.

Dellinger's going to win this one.

THE VOTERS CANT POSTPONE THEIR BILLS OR PAYMENTS. WHEN WE HAVE A DUE DATE IT MUST BE MET.
