Maybe Junior has a few jars of that moonshine he used to haul laying around
that he has been sipping on or maybe old age has dulled his better judgement like it has Andy Griffths.

Moonshiner Junior Johnson thinks Obama will protect second amendment rights? I have I been sleeping? I haven't heard Obama mention that in his platform. Junior Johnson's endorsement of Obama does about as much good as his endorsement of Roy Carter, NOTHING.

Re: Newspaper endorsements: President

I believe that all of these Newspapers have turned a blind eye toward Sen. Barack Obama's talk about "sharing the wealth". How does Obama do this?

If you could read Obama's lips they would be telling you (and of course, these lips change words everyday as necessary to please those listening!):
1. I PROPOSE to increase the top individual income tax rate by 13% (who does this apply to?), and .the second individual income tax by 10% (what does this mean?).
2. I PROPOSE to increase the capital gains tax rate by 33% (what will investors do?).
3. I PROPOSE to increase the tax rate on dividends by 33% (will anybody invest to get taxed more?).
4. I PROPOSE to reinstate the death tax (not in current law) with a new top marginal tax rate of 45% (Why would anyone leave their sons and daughters any money only to have it given to the government?).
5. I PROPOSE tax increases for corporations (Gee, N&O this affects the N&O, "Joe the Plumber", or the power companies? But then. SOMEBODY has to pay for Obama's PROPOSED Health Insurance!)

Considering the expected increased Democratic Control over the House and the Senate, what will stop Obama? BTW: The Tax Policy Center estimates that the above tax plans would raise taxes by 627 BILLION dollars over ten years. Honestly, will anybody afford to do anything EXCEPT WORK TO PAY TAXES?

Sounds like Herbert Hoover's days are back! (Remember the 1929 Stock Market Crash?)

Re: Newspaper endorsements: U.S. Senate

Ah, the traditional conservative whining about newspaper endorsements. It's like clockwork each election It's so unfair! After all, we republicans have provided such a sterling track record of accomplishment! Our country has never been better! Maybe the fact that the editorial boards aren't endorsing most of the republicans is that the republicans aren't offering viable solutions to the problems facing us?

FFC, I've never known where you get your facts from. You actually contradict yourself right away by pointing out that the N&O endorsed McCrory. GASP! Is he a socialist too?

The N&O is owned by McClatchy. Hey, wait, you're right! These people who run the company do look like wild-eyed, long-haired, dope-smoking, free-love hippies who want everyone living in Soviet apartment blocks! True liberal socialists there!

The others are all owned by some form of media conglomerate - Landmark Communications, Paxton Media Group, Gannett, New York Times Company, Cox Enterprises, and the Wilson Times Co. None of those strike me as liberal, though I suppose that you'll jump on the NY TImes which owns the Wilmington Star-News. According to Wikipedia, the companies (NYTimes, Gannett, and McClatchy) that have reported revenues on Wikipedia earned over $14 billion last year. Like I said, socialists!

Of the smaller companies, you're not going to find socialists (or even commies!) either. Paxton has been criticized for having a conservative bias. I know nothing about the Wilson newspaper, but it's owned by a very small company in Wilson. Last time I checked, Wilson wasn't know as a hotbed of liberalism or socialism. It's just a town of people trying to get by (and some commuters to Raleigh).

Look, just admit it. Dole's a lousy senator. Admit it, move on, and try to find a decent republican to run next time. I'll give you a big tip: start with someone actually from North Carolina next time.

No, Hackney doesn't put people in his pockets. That's not the kind of person or politician he is. He's unusual in this regard, but the fact that he is straight as an arrow is what got him elected Speaker in the wake of the Jim Black scandal. The House knew it needed to clean its act up and they elected the one man who not only had the experience and intelligence to do the job but whose character and record were and are utterly unassailable.

Even the GOPers acknowledged that he was fair and that the House was run quite differently under Hackney from the way things were managed by Black.

I love it, "99% most likely". That's where it is supposed to be going but until you prove me wrong, it is too coincidental with all of the money from the DNC going to Perdue. They are trying to maintain their power in the governor's mansion as well. And what about the influence that the unions will have in the mansion?

If by chance the contributions from Rand, Basnight and Hackney did go to support house and senate seats, then there are some other big sugar daddies (in state and out of state) that want to bypass the $4k personal maximum to also gain control of Beverly.

That money from Hackney most likely went to the House Caucus. They maybe Democrats, but they aren't likely to give that much money to the broader party. Their donations have the purpose of getting their fellow legislative members re-elected and expanding the majority.

Never hurts to suggest that you should vote for McCrory.

You have essentially just confirmed that Beverly has lied to all of North Carolina's voters when she said that she was her own women and not tied to any group of politicians in Raleigh. We assumed that she has lying as everyone has known that Beverly was beholden to Rand and Basnight and will do exactly what they say when she is Governor. But it's sad that she could not fess up to her bondage to them, including Easley.

I respect what you say about Hackney as I don't know him. However he has just contributed $125k to the DNC and it has very likely been funneled to Perdue's campaign. I had no intention to infer that Hackney was beholden to Perdue. Just the opposite: It appears that Hackney will be another Raleigh politician that will have Perdue in their back pocket.

the money from Rand and Basnight is 99% most likely going to the Democratic Senate Caucus (State Senators) and Hackney's money is 99% most likely going to the Democractic House Caucus (State Representatives).

They have to make sure they maintain their power in the State House.

Hey now, concerned53, I don't believe I said who I was voting for, so don't be getting all presumptuous.

But geez, if I thought Perdue were going to be beholden to unions, I'd vote for her. As far as Rand and Basnight are concerned, she's already beholden to them. Nuthin' to be done about that if she's elected.

Again, you're mistaken to lump Hackney in with the rest. He isn't like those folks, never has been and never will be. He's perhaps the smartest man in the General Assembly, but without question the most ethical. He owes nothing to anyone, as anyone who knows that place can tell you.

There is no way in "heck" that reform will occur if Beverly is beholden to the unions as well as Basnight, Rand and Hackney. Payback will be demanded for the money given.

With the democrats likely in control of the house and senate, consider a moderate republican as a check & balance for one party having so much power. There are a lot of democrats and independents in this same pickle and you would be amazed as to how many are voting for McCrory. It might be worth you considering the same for the good of the entire state versus just your personal platform.

Getting a grip........

Isaac made the observation"

"Get a grip, folks. The Democrats are kicking butt this election."

I realize the truth of that statement and have been making plans for the future.

My hardcopy of the Carolina Journal is now being delivered to a post office box I rented with a fake ACORN registration card. And last week I was watching NC Spin with some of my newfound liberal buddies and I joined in the laughter as they bashed John Hood. I felt sick afterwards. When I got home my wife noticed my sobbing and I told her how bad I felt for joining in the bashing of John. She asked me if I wanted to go back to that place where they put me in that straight-jacket.

I think I’m getting better now. And I’ve started eating those sun-dried tomato bagels with raspberry cream cheese (un-toasted but sliced) and drinking FIJI water. I’m beginning to feel so liberal…..and I hope to find the courage to quit cheating on my taxes and start recycling soy milk containers.

P.S. I have been told that the transformation to liberal will be complete when I develop a pen-pal/letter-writing arrangement with Speaker Black. It is so exciting to be ‘born again.’
