Good. There are a lot of good folks working there, and they probably are demoralized. Maybe this will make them feel better. At the same time, Cansler needs to continue to ride herd on the few bad apples that make the whole institution look rotten.

Re: N.C. scores 'D' on mental health

I am really shocked that NC scored that high. After reading this News and Observe stories and listening to the comments from people working in our hospitals and my personal experience working at an LME, I would give NC an F. It is a shame that after so much media attention that the govenor still wants to take away more money, close down badly needed hospital wards, and built another mistake like the mistake they built in Butner. It is a shame that mentally ill people get turned away from state hospitals because there isn't enough room and staff to work with them. It is a shame the NC puts mentally ill people in jail because the local hospitals refuse to treat them. The interesting thing I noted was that many states scored lower in 2008 compared to 2006. I hope those rich bankers and CEO enjoy their bail out from the government. How do these politicians and their lot sleep at night?

NC needs to raise taxes and pay front line psych techs more $$ who provide most of the care at the state institutions like Cherry Hospital.

You go, Guv!

There is nothing wrong with a surprise visit by the boss to keep folks on their feet. It is refreshing to say the least! And it shows that she is taking a personal and "hands on" approach.

Maybe she will swing by a few of the State's school bus garages or some of the DOT maintenance yards for an unsheduled visit.

I'm impressed!

maybe she got to see a combative patient get thrown into a seclusion room or a patient who has turned purple from neuroleptic meds. Psych techs deserve a pay raise! Its some of the toughest work in state government.

This is progress in itself! I'm not sure Easley is even aware that we have a Cherry Hospital. Well done, Governor!

This woman is barely literate, not to mention either lying herself, or has been deceived herself about the expenditures. I certainly hope she's not being paid any more than she was as a computer minion .... and would be very interested to know what the posting and hiring process for the presidency might be, assuming that it is a paid position and not a volunteer post.

I see a scapegoat has been found-the former data entry operator now running a foundation. You knew it was not going to be the Medical Director or the Admin Asst. If they need a second scapegoat it will the Administrative Secretary. The hospital administrator and workout guy ass admin will also be found to having nothing to do with it Once again salary and perks flow up and responsibility flows down. I am still waiting for Wachovia to blame the person who keyboarded the purchase documents for the Golden West Pick a Payment purchase. It certainly could not be the man who made $27 million and killed a bank, could it?

Now that half of the state's mental health hospitals have lost federal funds, can we stop blaming the problems with mental health reform on "privatization"?

This is another failure of Bev Perdue in her role as North Carolina's healthcare leader. And will someone please fire Secretary Benton for his total lack of leadership.

The Democratic Party and it's departments have totally mismanaged the mental healthcare in North Carolina.

I would say the conservative estimates of losing $400 million should be enough for North Carolina residents to throw out the Dems.
