Re: Fed can borrow from us, Moore says

I have admired Richard Moore and agree that he is smarter and understands the economy and most other things better than many of our "leaders." But this little boasting joke apparently made in his incessant quest for national media attention isn't even a little funny to me.

Questions for the Treasurer:
Shall we get ready to add the capital H to hubris?
Are you familiar with the frequent payoff to those who display it, especially in such a gloating fashion?
"I'll loan them the money" - oh really, will you? All by yourself? Do you remember whose money that actually is?

ConMax, let me know next time you have a kid. When it happens, I'll make sure to invest in Reynolds Wrap...something tells me that tin foil sales will be going up.

The deficit, as measured by % of GDP, is nowhere near record levels. Chill.

Fed can borrow from us, Moore says

Paper Currency BS! Moore should be moving all of the state funds into Bullion Gold and Silver and stashing it with the State National Guard under a Secure unused Bank Vault with orders to shoot the first government idiot that even comes close to it. The last place one wants to do is invest in failed government that is totaly out control......Mr Moore, take your Tin Foil Fabin school of economics and shove it up Lord Mayard Keynes worthless toilet paper rear.......

I also wish we had him in the US Senate right now. Richard has more knowledge about the nation's financial situation in his little finger than Liddy Dole and Dick Burr have in both their brains.

I know someone was taping the event, so I wish I could have the video, but Treasurer Moore gave a great extemporaneous speech on Tues night about the current economic crisis at the Campbell Law Professionalism Dinner in Raleigh. He not only methodically explained how the crisis occurred, but managed to pinpoint the individual events which led to it, and how he ensured NC would not be in the same boat.

He also advised the audience, comprised of judges, lawyers, professors, and students, about what they could do in their own financial lives to ensure their success/survival (Basic, but good advice: 1) Keep good credit and 2) Diversify).

I voted for Bev Perdue in the primary, and I know she'll make a great governor, but Mr. Moore showed he is the right man in the right job at the right time for North Carolina. I hope he continues to share his thoughts with all North Carolinians about the current financial crisis.

Re: Monday quick hits

The campaign managers for Beverly Perdue and Bob Orr will no doubt be looking for ways to keep their candidates from getting all tangled up while looking for votes in Burke County. So here are two possible itineraries to consider (pick one of these two):

Either Orr could have lunch in Valdese while Perdue dines in Glen Alpine,
or Perdue could stop for coffee in Icard while Orr is enjoying a java in the heart of Drexel.

Of course, sometimes campaign managers of candidates competing in separate party primaries like to arrange a "chance meeting" of the two candidates so as to add an extra dash of publicity in the races against their fellow Democrats and Republicans, so how about an environmental protection event in Connelly Springs?

Of course, if Orr and Perdue wish to go ahead and schedule a friendly debate in Burke County, they could call up WRAL's morning news show and ask Morganton native Bill Leslie to go home to moderate. He could even play some of those Blue Ridge songs of his on his guitar before the candidates commence to speechifying just to get everybody into a good frame of mind.

Then, for good measure, don't forget to add a reporter from the Morganton News-Herald and a Catawba Valley bureau writer for the Charlotte Observer to the panel, and folks will be hearing about these campaigns all the way to Hickory, Lenoir and Rutherfordton.

Could Tim Russert match that?

Just think, if all the candidates running for governor and lieutenant governor would pair up across party lines and go hit the hustings across the Old North State, then by the time the party's respective nominees are selected, folks would have a pretty good idea of what the candidates hope to achieve for North Carolina in the next four years.

Re: Moore on Countrywide

It is possible that the Treasurer currently has only $12 million of state money invested in Countrywide Financial Corp. but as of June 30, 2006, when Countrywide was making all those "100% loans" that have been blamed for the current credit crunch, the Treasurer's Office report on investments shows that it held 2,508,005 shares of Countrywide having a market value of around $95.2 million.

Hopefully the investment managers sold before the stock imploded, assuming the Treasurer was accurate today.

Regardless, the bigger question is if the Treasurer wants to "use the state's authority as a shareholder to push for management changes", why didn't he do that last year when it would have mattered? He had more shares. The pension fund had more money at risk. The same loans were being made.

Perhaps profiting off of suspect business practices is ok. Well, as long as there is a profit.

Hmmm, wonder if Moore understands that BofA has taken on a $2 billion chunk of Countrywide?

And EVERY lender who did 100% loans is now suspect?

That is a long, long list, Mr. Treasurer.

What a tool.
