Re: Galifianakis and Helms, on screen

Let's face it, the Helms' team was smart. People like to vote for people with short names. It's very hard to get elected with any time of long name.

The perfect political name is "Bob Dole". No wonder he was elected so many times to the U.S. Senate, tho it shows that voters are more discriminating for President.

Another of my heroes has a great name: "Jack Kemp". Short and sweet.

Zach can waste his own time with all the hate. It only hurts him, not anyone else. (Don't give into hate, it only leads to the dark side.) Sometimes hate can eat you up. Many people may call Helms a hater. He was probably a racist, as he was from an older generation, but he did not hate.

Thanks.

Re: Krugman criticizes Blue Cross of N.C.

Krugman argues that none of the plans currently being discussed would force people into a government-run health care plan.

The above is an example of crappy reporting. By using the contsruction "Krugman argues..." you do a disservice to your readers. If I'm uninformed on the topic at hand, I come away from this blog post thinking that one side says X, the other side says Y. I walk away from this piece of reporting no better-informed than when I started my day.

A good reporter would instead have written, "None of the plans currently being discussed would force people into a government-run health care plan." This is an unarguable fact. Such a statement from the reporter would leave his readers with a better understanding of the issues.

Instead, your readers are forced to choose sides between the Corporation or the Liberal, and nobody leaves any better off than when we started.

I'm sorry, but this is a huge pet peeve of mine. If somebody is making a factual claim that is verifiable, do some freaking reporting and figure out who is right! Tell your readers!

My fellow Americans, did you

My fellow Americans, did you think about the issues in play before you cast your vote in the November 4 election? It would be nice to think that most of you did, but I know that the reality of how much people think about their political choices is less than studied. Many of you may even have studied more about whether you should take out a payday advance than who to vote for. As a case in point, check out this brief audio snippet from a recent episode of “The Howard Stern Show,” posted courtesy of BPM Deejays of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Roving Reporter Sal sought the opinions of men and women on the street, to see whether they supported Barack Obama or John McCain for President. Admittedly, they were attempting to gauge whether African-Americans would automatically vote for Obama simply because he’s black. That point is driven home by the location Sal obtains his samples from: Harlem, New York. However, the trick Sal employs in his interviews is telling. By reversing the candidates’ positions on issues like the pro-life argument, stem cell research, the war in Iraq and who Sarah Palin is – attributing McCain’s positions to Obama – Sal gets people to admit that they support all kinds of ideas that Obama wants little or nothing to do with. He exposes the ugly truth that many of us are ignorant when it comes to the issues. We parrot popular opinions and flow along with our peer groups. But when it comes to things like presidential elections and your vote, I hope you thought about it considerably. The fact that most of us did not think for Obama’s point of view is the biggest mistake we made. Now, our chosen leader is in his position and right to decide for our country’s economical development. Let’s just watch, whether it will cause a good or bad for the United States.

Re: The Shallow South?

N. Carolina was stuck in the dixiecrat mold back before my time. On the state level there seems to be some form of this "automatic response". I agree that a lot of people from the north have moved to this area. I do not think it true they are "more educated". Every segment of every population has its strata.

Well, gee, Dome, I understand the terminology but am not entirely comfortable with the tag "Shallow South." (Ain't your homefolks going to take you to task for that? They should.)

See, this pending move to the city is already affecting your commentary.

I'm not ready to chunk the Mason Dixon line, and feel very secure in asserting North Carolina's status is still SOUTH. Nothin' shallow about it when you consider Virginia is sitting there between us and Maryland.

I guess it sounds better than saying "diluted," but I'm not sure.

North Carolina has only been solidly "red" in Presidential races. We elect Democratic leaders in the State government and our Congressional and Senate races are often close. We have more Democratic members of Congress than Republicans. We now have one each for Senators.

Do not forget taht North Carolina is the state that had Jesse Helms and John Edwards serving together in the Senate.

Re: Ross, Silver take the gold in punditry

So what? Please use a little critical thinking on this point. It means nothing to predict the race. It helps no voters or citizens to hear endless daily polls in the press. Why do we have these polls? What if we had no polls reported until the actual poll on election day? In that case we would actually hear from the campaigns on the issues. Wow, what an idea! Please think of who actually benifits from all the polling and you will see why we don't need it. Prediction is not a science, it is opinion. All these Obama predictors could have been made wrong by any overnight incident that got out the last days of the campaign, and then all the McCain predictors would have won. It means nothing. It harms our political life.

I'd like to point out that my office pool prediction for this blog was remarkably close to the actual result: 49.8% for Obama, 49.3% for McCain, and 0.8% for Barr. Actual result, last I checked: 49.7% for Obama, 49.4% for McCain, and 0.6% for Barr.

But the percentage of African-American voters was actually lower this election than in the past (Not because there were fewer African-American voters, but because turnout was higher overall). I'm not convinced that was the reason Dole lost.
