What on God's green earth is going on? We have people who have been out of work for months, people getting laid off and furloughed left and right,(front page of N&O) Chrysler is closing fourteen dealerships right now so those people are losing their jobs, and OUR LEGISLATURE IS VOTING ON SANITARY WIPES? Could we PLEASE cut the crap and get down to business?!? Could we say that we will cut all but absolutely necessary spending for our budget next year (and for advice on what is necessary go to the people who live paycheck to paycheck in this state - food, home, water all of these are necessary. Sinking big money into "pork" projects, buying up land we don't need, and throwing money to friends, yes that is a stab at Bev's friend who is trying to take over an elected position, are NOT necessary).

I am so frustrated with this state. I wish more politicians were honest, and more people would vote!

The democRATS in Raleigh are more lethal than any germ we could ever face on any grocery cart anywhere in the world! The same can be said for the repupliRATS up there as well.

Can we get hand wipes to to rid ourselves of their collective slime?

In front of the Governor's Mansion, Legislature, and the Attorney General's Office, to name a few places, so that the citizenry can disinfect themselves when we DEPART buildings housing elected officials.

What a hypocrite. When she smoked, she could do it whereever she pleased. Now that she no longer smokes, she can't bear the thought of extending the courtesy to others.

Rev Barber has lost all credibility over Duke lacrosse and now the NCSU free speech grafitti tunnel. Not to mention is constant harping about how bad a job the NC legislature is doing(every year). Yet he implores everyone to vote these same people back in office (Democrats).

I would say do not balance the budget on the backs of the TAXPAYERS (all ethnic groups).

I have a suggestion for the legislators offering a constitutional amendment making the state superintendent of schools an appointed position. I agree with them! But they also need to change Article 9 of the Constitution (http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Legislation/constitution/article9.html) to say that the superintendent is the CHAIRMAN (not the secretary) of the board of education. This sort of accomplishes what Gov. Perdue set out to do: put together the chairman and CEO into one accountable official.

Good grief is that a necktie on her? Must be cutting off flow to the brain. I agree with texasamc, after 8 terms she could do better. Guess they are all worried that some of their favorite pork could get cut.

Really? Eight terms in the legislature and this is the best Rep. Adams can do? Apparently she has more thoughts on Speaker Pro Tem Wainwright's re-election than she does on the most important issues facing the state.

When Perdue claimed the Democratic nomination in her Raleigh victory party, she singled out Adams for special thanks. Richard Moore's campaign had put out both TV and radio ads (the latter aimed specifically at African-American radio stations) making very farfetched suggestions that Perdue was a racist. The silliest was to try to make her seem responsible for baseball caps adorned with the Confederate flag that were for sale at the truck stop in Georgia, which a stepson of hers owned. The purpose of the ads by the Moore campaign was to split off the black vote from Perdue. The ads backfired, since they portrayed African-Americans as stupid enough to believe any such thing; Moore's ads were themselves racist.

Alma Adams vigorously defended her friend, Bev Perdue. And after the primary was over, she suggested that Moore should "hide under a rock for all the dirt he did."

For her integrity, courage, loyalty, and effectiveness as a legislator, Adams certainly deserves a place in Perdue's cabinet.

Rep. Adams looks so nice in her hat!

It’s a shame that hats are not as fashionable as they once were. I can remember back in the 1940’s and 1950’s when women wore hats most of the time, and especially to church on Sunday. Easter Sunday was the height of hat fashion as every woman pulled out her favorite “Easter Bonnet.”

It gave you something to do during the sermon. While the preacher was wailing away us men could study the women’s hats. Most hats had a fish net with all sorts of stuff stuck into it. And many hats had several big bird feathers. And they were real bird feathers as fake bird feathers had not been invented by Al Gore yet. I sat in the rear, in the sinner’s row, and loved to gaze across the congregation of hats. It was like visiting a turkey farm. All those feathers bobbling up and down. The gobbling came later, on the ride home for not paying attention to the preacher.

I cleaned out my mother’s attic many years ago and found all her old hats. They brought back many memories. She did have one I kept, a big felt hat with a wide brim and lots of feathers…..really weird. I wear it when I visit Chapel Hill. It makes me fit right in.

Buxton has been Deputy State Superintendent at DPI since January 2007.
