I don't disagree that citizens and watchdog groups are needed, but there's no question that we have to have a strong and independent minded U. S. Attorney.

Basnight is correct that it shouldn't be anyone openly partisan. I think that might rule Shanahan out even if he weren't GOP. But for that matter, i don't think Shanahan had himself in mind when he made those comments about the effectiveness of the GOP U. S. Attorney here in prosecuting a few Democrats whose names we'd like to forget for a moment.

Everybody is angling for position right now, so these tidbits are interesting. Maybe not as captivating as the dog thing, but still.

In my opinion it is up to the citizens (and citizen watchdog groups) to keep an eye on any shennanigans in Raleigh and at the local level in North Carolina. If the leaders don't think people are paying attention, then why should they expect to be held accountable for wrongdoing?

Maybe with the help of an attorney such as Mr. Shanahan, we as the people can reign in an arrogant, over the top agency or agency leaders, especially when the leaders believe they can't be held accountable for their actions. More citizens must become involved.

Worker or Management?

How about worker and management? Is it possible to straddle both sides of the line?

Well, it appears Wayne Goodwin is trying to do so. Goodwin, who is the Democratic nominee for Insurance Commissioner, recently joined as a member of SEIU Local 2008 (formerly SEANC) according to The Insider.

If he's elected, whose side will he be on? You can't be "the boss" and be a rank-and-file union member, those two things are opposites. It's like saying you're a Duke and a Carolina fan.

Of course, this is a common question when it comes to public employee labor unions, is where does the division of labor fall? Who is management and who isn't? Who negotiates against who? Apparently Goodwin thinks he can be everything to everybody.

Or he's just doing it for political expediency... Nah, that couldn't be the case, could it?

Re: Who's given to Dole's PAC?

There's actually more than just these two, Ryan. I don't have them in front of me right now, but I've been looking at three different PACs that are in Dole's name, and this one (Leadership Circle) is not one of those. Thanks for the info. :)

Perhaps people pick on him because they don't trust him. Maybe it's like the heros of the mortgage industry (where nobody's praising last year's heros now that we realize "that" screw-over.) I must admit a deep concern about him running for gov after learning his contributors were getting "his" state business, just seemed like he'd be better off running a lottery... if you get my insult.

I'd rather have Les Merritt as gov. I heard he's not as slick and pretty as others, but if you go soley on track record, Les Merritt'd be the only one running.

The pension fund grew under Moore even though our legislators raped the fund. Why are people criticizing him? Give the man a break. I would have rather seen him as our next Governor than the two running. At least he knows how to balance a budget.

Richard Moore has done a wonderful job for the pension fund. Why are people so down on him?

If you do the crime--you do the time!! Anyone who is held accountable for the Public Trust should be held to the highest standards of ethics and integrity. Once you violate the public trust you should pay the price. To me, this become particularly acute when you are involved at the local level. After all, as they say, all politics is local. That's where the bad behavior begins. If a politician at the Municipal level gets away with questionable ethical behavior, what do you think that person will do when he/she gets to a higher level in government? I would like to see more accountability at the local level in terms of statutes and ethical policies that are consistent amongst all municipalities within at least Wake County. The penalty of violation should be severe when appropriately proven. One of the ways of mitigating against bad public official behavior is term limits. This is a strategy that should be looked at all levels of Government.
