The league leads my representative around on a pound puppy leash. I hope they wake him up so he will vote to keep annexation. They are real impressed with him.

Against their will..........

"The bill was drafted in response to long-festering anger over municipalities' ability to annex property owners against their will."

We need to get off this business......worrying about the will of the people! "The will of the people" is an outdated concept in modern governance. The "people" don't have any lobbyists so they obviously have no "right" to be heard in matters of government. If the "people" were truly interested in what government was doing then they would hire lobbyists.

Annex them, tax them, kick them around. They probably won't even notice.

"The will of the people".......give me a break!

Re: SEANC airs two more ads

Good for you SEANC. I would add my vote to making both Representatives Holliman and Gibson "priors"......
Neither has any intention of any kind of serious
reform to the state annexation law.
They don't care about the little old ladies that will lose their homes. They don't care about the children and families that do not have insurance now because times are so bad.
They don't care about the children wanting to go to college and
their parents not being able to afford it.
They don't care that the Chappell's family farm near Rocky Mount will have to be sold because they cannot pay for the main water and sewer lines that this annexation will allow the city to run around their property at a cost to the Chappells of $217,000.00. This the Chappells will be forced to pay, even though they don't need water and sewer.
They don't care that Mr. Chappell is fighting cancer also.
They only care about staying in good standing with The League and being informed by The League. before the session is even over, that they can continue with the annexations in their districts.
They only care about allowing cities like Charlotte to have bragging rights about being among the fastest growing cities in the nation.
Charlotte's own Chamber of Commerce said that Charlotte didn't really grow, they just annexed.

RTB I have been hearing this for a long time, at least since around 1995 or so. Where does Gibson reside? Where do his children go to school? Exactly where does his wife work? Just because someone maintains an address somewhere does not make them a resident. Why can't these questions be answered once and for all? If it is true that he lives in Raleigh, wife works in Raleigh, kids schooled in Raleigh then he is not living in Anson and why is he being protected? Who was the other guy that maintained a residence for district purposes but didn't actually live in that mobile home but lived in the really nice house somewhere else. Mitchell or something? Why is it different for Gibson? Maybe the N & O since they are really in the investigative journalism mode right now will sove this issue.

Pryor Gibson is gaining pace everyday on the MOST corrupt list...which state dept does his wife work in? Where do his children attend school, Raleigh or Anson Co? In the past, he has refused to answer these basic questions.

you can start asking new hires to pay for insurance but us retirees are just making it now. we accepted jobs as teachers and state employees back when we made 3-4 thousand dollars a year and accepted in exchange for lower pay employer paid health care. as in the bailey case this is a contract and if broken will only cost more in legal fees. if the state really is broke maybe it should forego pay raises this year or raise revenues but don't try to balance the budget on the back of the retiree

The ONLY thing that is going to make this plan more attractive to younger and healthier employees and their families is to make the dependent coverage affordable - lower the rate instead of raising it. Let everyone pay a minimal cost for the 80/20 plan - employees and retirees, lower the cost for dependent coverage and see if you can't get more people to take advantage of it. Face it; people who are going out to get their own coverage are going to pay for it; make the SHP no more expensive than private coverage and employees will pay. There are very few companies or states who provide free employee only coverage, and less that provide free coverage for retirees. I'm not talking about a huge premium - it wouldn't have to be if everyone paid it. There are approximately 667,000 State employees and retirees in the plan. If everyone paid just $25 a month that would generate $16,675,000.00 monthly (approximately $200,100,000 annually) into the plan. I think most people would see the wisdom in that.

I was told by old timers that pre 1970s "completion" of the Interstate highway system, the quickest route for some members from the mountains to Raleigh was actually though Georgia and South Carolina. The western tip of Cherokee County (the county where Marble is located)is the same distance to the Mississippi River as to Raleigh

Not all mountain biking is in state parks, silly. There are many legal trails where mountain bikers share land with hunters. I've ridden past drunken bear hunters in the NC mountains. Also have ridden past those who WERE hunting in state parks in the NC mountains.
