Reminds me of a fundraising appeal where the caller said he was raising money "for cancer". I told him that I would prefer to give money "against cancer.". It turned out he was raising money for the American Cancer Society and was using shorthanded speech to describe his cause.

I have often heard similar shorthanded misuses of "for"

I wouldn't assign the core function appropriation requests to a specific member.

However, if there are earmarks for new funding via appropriations in the budget, i think you should assign them.

I think the state budget is a different thing. The purpose of this exercise is to look into special appropriations requested by a legislator. When the budget comes out, I'll look at that separately.

I'd just like to add that getting the collective common Conservative to admit there even was a Jewish Holocaust is a victory unto itself.

Mr. Womble has in his statement disregarded the lives of the 6 million Jews who were murdered from 1933 to 1945 by Nazi Germany and their chohorts. To say that 2000 people sterilized is worse than the Nazi German atrocities is just asinine.
He wasn't comparing, he wasn't equating, he was totally negating historical fact just to try to make the eugenics program seem worse than the horrible deaths and torture inflicted upon the Jewish population. That is not acceptable, it is deplorable! Mr. Womble should offer a very public apology to the Jewish people.
Speaker Hackney, as the "boss" of the NC House, I challenge you to hold this man accountable for his insensitive, horrible, hurtful and quite frankly idiotic statement. This coming from Womble, a Democrat, at a time when we are supposed to be embracing each other not spitting on another group of human beings is disturbing.

To compare this to Nazi Germany and the Holocaust is beyond hyperbole. I am very sorry that Mr. Womble is obviously very poorly educated about the actualities of the imprisonment, torture, and death of millions of innocent men, women, children, and babies. I am very offended by his insensitivity and ethnocentrism. I have friends who have severely mentally challenged children for whom they sought sterilization, and I think in that context it is a most thoughtful, humane and loving thing to do. Extremely mentally challenged young women often are incapable of associating the consequences of sexual behavior with pregnancy and childbirth, and would be extremely terrified to be put into a position to deal with this. Needless to say, they would be totally incapable of parenting this offspring. Why put them through it?

HEy Radioman, you're comfortable with the govt pigs deciding who is and isn't mentally sound??? The same people that think the answer to our current national bankruptcy is more spending? I don't know a lot about this issue, but my understanding is that if you were black, you were a heckuva of more likely to be judged as mentally challenged. In this way, I agree with the fundamentals on this... it was horrible, and restitution is in order.

If I read the background on the case correctly, MOST of the people were VERY
retarded and should not have had children in the FIRST PLACE. And so far as the family name goes, MOST didn't know WHO their fathers were anyway!

At first, I said "The guy's an idiot". HE may not be an idiot, but he's certainly said something very, very stupid. And I'd oppose his bill if it blocked the ACTUAL victims from getting a FAIR compensation for the horrible, over-reaching, orwellian acts of the govt. $20K is a pittance, if it gets the govt off the hook entirely, forever, the bill is as stupid as the guys 'Nazi' exaggeration.

Your anonymous, hastily typed internet post has shaken the halls of power. Get over yourself. Perhaps Womble thinks it's "worse" because it happened in his community. I agree that it's a dumb comment, but the only people who care are those who want to oppose compensation but don't want to look like jerks. So you find something PC to complain about in hopes that it will somehow undermine his efforts.
