THAT is a TERRIBLE headline!!!!! On first glance, you would think somebody SHOT Bev to prevent another Sleazely Gang fiasco, or another one of her monumental screwups!!! AWFUL!!!!

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think, as a matter of journalistic ethics, that a headline should ever say "[Insert Public Official Here] Shot..."
just to get you to read the story. We should not trivialize the concept of violence being perpetrated against an elected leader.

I will defer to the comments included in the "Young Voices" section of the Charlotte Observer in March.

Khevna Desai, 16, School of Math, Engineering, Technology, & Science at Olympic High School, Charlotte, says,

"It's quality not quantity that matters. ... In our schools we spend about 50 percent of the school day learning, and the other 50 percent having fun. Another two hours in school isn't going to change anything if those two hours are spent wasting time."

Sean Keady, 12, Marvin Ridge Middle School, Waxhaw, says,

"Students shouldn't spend more time with their teachers. Instead, the time with the students should be used effectively."

Emily Trenning, 14, Smith Academy of International Languages, Charlotte, says

"Yes, foreign students seem to be smarter than us. However, I think it's because of their teachers and their lessons, not because of the length of their school day or the hours they put in."

Finally, Adam Kiihr, 16, Charlotte Christian, Charlotte, says,

"While America's education system is a blatant and glaring problem, adding to the time that students spend in the classroom will not be nearly as effective as making the time already spent in the classroom more effective."

I can see why many NC students perform poorly. After all these years of statehood and we still can't figure out who is running the schools. This should have been worked out during Reconstruction by the latest.

Who is "standing up for the children?" Who is "fightin' for education?" Who is "protectin' the classroom?"

June Atkinson was asked that very question at a Wake County Taxpayers meeting in Raleigh and she again said she was against lifting the ceiling on charter schools. She said she was fearful of creating failing charter schools. Apparently she is not afraid of creating failing public schools.

Layers of supervision often lead to that bloated feeling.......

Maybe we should add something like: "....plus the judge said we had to give June a chance since the voters elected her to the office. Does a judge have more power than the Governor? When Ms. Bev says, 'Because I'm the Governor,' and then when the judge says, 'Because I'm the judge,'......well, my question is, whose 'because' is the strongest? And when I asked why those lawyer bills were so high, the only answer..... "Because I'm the lawyer."

All this gives me that 'bloated' feeling.

Not everyone was shocked...or even dazed.

How about change that to "some" state residents were shocked. Or maybe "many" were shocked.

I really was not shocked. I would be shocked if any publically funded school or state agency was not bloated. It's built into the system although the business classes don't teach such. The bloated adminstration probably tries to teach their business students the "stern realities of life" so that they can go into business and be successful.

But I like the word "bloated." It describes much of the problem in state government.
