Since when do we let the majority vote on the rights of the minority? One of the things that makes this country and state great is that both the state and federal constitutions protect the rights of minorities. How many years ago was it that interracial marriage was against the law? Same sex marriage today is in the same place that interracial marriage was then. Civil marriage is a civil right.

Bill Graham supports two recent proposed constitutional amendments.

A candidate for the Republican nomination for governor, he told Dome that an amendment to restrict the use of eminent domain is needed to make sure property isn't seized unfairly.

"I'm not for the distribution of the power of eminent domain to private developers," he said.

He also said a proposed amendment to add a ban on gay marriage to the state constitution is also needed to "remove any question" about it.

"The institution of marriage is between one man and one woman — period, full stop," he said.

A bill putting the eminent domain amendment on the ballot is in the Senate. Last month, House Speaker Joe Hackney killed a bill that would have put a gay marriage ban before voters.
