The presidential race in North Carolina remains close.

A recent poll by Rasmussen Reports shows presumptive Republican nominee John McCain with 48 percent of support and Barack Obama with 45 percent.

Rasmussen's polls have shown a tighter race than other polls. One in June showed McCain with a two-point lead, while Survey USA gave him a five-point lead, Democratic firm Public Policy Polling showed a four-point lead, and the conservative Civitas Institute also showed him up four points.

So far, TV advertising does not appear to be affecting the race in a major way. Obama has run three different ads in North Carolina since the primary, while McCain has run just one.

The survey of 500 likely voters was conducted on July 15, 2008. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
