Perdue's total also doesn't include the over $650,000 the NEA (teacher's union) spent on TV and radio on her behalf in the Primary.

Apparently old Protzman thinks that loaning yourself $630,000 counts as fundraising...

Bottom line is, McCrory, who has been in the race for 7 months, is doing a pretty decent job at raising money, compared to someone like Perdue, who has essentially been running for 8 years. If she has to loan herself over half a million dollars to be competitive this Fall, then she is not the powerhouse she is perceived as being

Let me paraphrase your post:

Perdue is kicking McCrory's @$$ in fundraising, but if you just squint your eyes hard enough through the Red Republican haze you can make a case that it ain't really all that bad.

If you're going to give advice about what McCoal should or shouldn't do with campaign ads, maybe you should try to get a gig in the garage band instead of blogging for a supposedly balanced newspaper.

Given my leanings in the direction of high blood pressure, I guess I'll go back to ignoring the Dome for awhile.

Who's ahead in gubernatorial fundraising?

Campaign finance reports from both Democratic nominee Beverly Perdue and Republican rival Pat McCrory for second-quarter fundraising show they both had a good second quarter.

Here's a breakdown of the numbers:

Fundraising: Since April 20, Perdue raised $2.3 million from individual donors and political action committees, while McCrory raised $1.1 million, almost entirely from individuals. Perdue has a clear advantage, especially with PACs.

Cash on Hand: Perdue had $1.4 million at the end of the second quarter, while McCrory had $700,000. Again, Perdue has the advantage, with more than twice the money to spend. Still, take out her $630,000 in personal loans and she would barely edge McCrory.

Spending: Perdue spent $2 million in the second quarter, while McCrory spent $486,000. Put another way, Perdue spent more last quarter than McCrory has so far this year. She's spending a lot more on outside consulting, while he is relying on paid staffers.

After being in statewide office for eight years and raising nearly $10 million for her gubernatorial run, Perdue is clearly ahead in the money game. Still, McCrory has ramped up pretty well for a guy who didn't start running until January.

He may not be running a "garage band" campaign any more, but McCrory's still, say, a midlist recording artist who frequently tours small clubs. If he runs effective, low-budget ads like he did in the primary, he could be the OK Go of 2008.
